Brian Shirley celebrates Friday's Summer Nationals win at Farmer City.
What won the race: Pole-starting Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., led all caution-free 40 laps to capture Friday's $10,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals stop at Farmer City Raceway. Shirley notched his fourth tour victory of the season, and first since June 18 at Sycamore Speedway, for his 42nd career series victory.
Quotable: “For me, it was biding my time, I felt like a couple of them lapped cars we didn’t hit just right, where I had to be hung out there a little bit. All in all everything went our way and I got by lapped traffic enough to control the race," Shirley said. "Luckily there, we ended up losing a brakeline; about halfway through the race, I smacked the (turn-three) wall pretty good and I had to re-adjust because I actually only have rear brakes.”
Key notes: After winning Thursday's $7,500 Herald & Review 100 at Macon Speedway, seventh-starting Ryan Unzicker moved into the runner-up position on lap 16 and trailed Shirley the rest of the way, finishing 2.047 seconds back. ... Tanner English moved into third on lap 27 and rounded out the podium. ... Dennis Erb Jr. traded the runner-up position with Unzicker for several laps, before fading to fourth. ... Series points leader Ashton Winger battled Mike Harrison just before the halfway mark, prevailing to finish fifth; Harrison finished seventh. ... Shannon Babb started 20th and finished 11th after losing a driveshaft while battling Shirley for the lead in their heat race; he started the feature with a provisional. ... After earning fast-time honors for the first time on the Summer Nationals, track points leader Logan Moody was an early retiree in the feature ... Friday's feature lasted 10 minutes with 12 competitors completing 40 laps.
On the move: Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., started seventh and finished second.
