Kyle Moore is congratulated by Ashton Winger after winning $5,000 at WCS.
What won the race: Second-starting Kyle Moore of Mansfield, Ohio, traded sliders and crossover moves with Ashton Winger for several laps after the halfway mark, then fended off Winger on a late-race restart to lead all 40 laps at Wayne County Speedway, winning Sunday's $5,000 DIRTcar Summer Nationals finale. Moore scored his first career Summer Nationals victory, beating Winger to the line by 1.483 seconds.
Quotable: “Well I was kinda happy (about the late-race caution), I didn’t know how close (Ashton) Winger was,” Moore said. “I just knew I was softer on the right rear (tire compound) than he was and the first yellow came out and it was a long yellow, I’m like ‘Man, this is what I needed.’ Oh my god man, I tell ya what, we lost our mom back in February and this one's for her.”
Key notes: An emotional Moore, who lost his mother earlier in the year and dedicated the victory to her, becomes the fifth first-time tour winner this season, joining Stormy Scott, Logan Martin, Mike Harrison and Dylan Thompson. ... Fourth-starting Winger, of Hampton, Ga., settled for the runner-up position while clinching the 2023 Summer Nationals championship along with adding the $10,000 Week 5 points bonus. ... Fifth-starting Rod Conley took third place for good on lap 37 and rounded-out the podium. ... After battling with Drake Troutman for nearly the entire race, Bob Gardner prevailed to finish fourth; Troutman sustained a flat right rear tire and drew the race's final caution on lap 38, ending his night. ... Twentieth-starting Ryan Unzicker overcame a flat left rear on lap 26 and finished sixth. ... Thomas Hunziker started 22nd and finished 11th. ... Pole-starting Ryan Markham suffered a flat right rear on lap 26 and finished 12th. ... Sunday's race was slowed three times and lasted 27 minutes with 12 competitors completing 40 laps.
On the move: Kye Blight of Katanning, West Australia, started 19th and finished fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Moore’s Rocket Chassis carries sponsorship from Evans Elite Paving LTD., Team Midwest Paint, Joyride Transport, Smitley Towing, Kipling Flooring, R.L Bond Septic Tank Service, Elite Munitions, John’s Drain Service & Excavating, Missler Industries, Fox Racing Shox and Platinum Designs.
Points chase: After Wayne County (overall final): 1. Ashton Winger (1,417); 2. Jason Feger (1,202); 3. Bob Gardner (1,115); 4. Kye Blight (1,052); 5. Thomas Hunziker (719).
