Officials check on Jesse Sobbing after his violent wreck. The Malvern, Iowa, driver was sore but otherwise OK.
What won the race: In a race marred by Jesse Sobbing's violent wreck at the end of the backstretch while battling for the lead, ninth-starting Justin Zeitner of Malvern, Iowa, went from third to first on a lap-21 restart to win Saturday’s 25-lap Malvern Bank Super Late Model Series nightcap at Huset’s Speedway. Zeitner, who took the point from Tad Pospisil, earned $5,053 while a shaken-up Sobbing walked to the ambulance under his own power after his scary wreck. He was battling Bill Leighton Jr. for the lead at the end of the backstretch when they got together, turning Sobbing's car right as it barrel-rolled hard into the turn-three fence before landing on its wheels.
Quotable: "My dad finally just cut me loose with the checkbook, let's me get what I need," Zeitner said. "And I mean, when you got good stuff, it's easy to win — I mean, I won't say it's easy to win — but it definitely makes it a lot easier. I wouldn't be able to do it without him. I've got great engines, great race cars and my crew is second to none."
Key notes: Justin Zeitner won his fourth series event of the season. ... He won a Repairable Vehicles.com Tri-State Series event Wednesday at Huset's. ... Outside front-row starter Bill Leighton Jr. led the first 14 laps but spun after the contact with Jesse Sobbing and restarted on the tail, handing the lead for the lap-15 restart to Tad Pospisil, who led six circuits. ... Sobbing's hard contact in turn three put a hole in the catchfencing that required quick repairs. ... Sobbing greeted Zeitner in victory lane and told DirtonDirt he'll be OK. “I’m sore but I still have a little adrenaline going, so I’m sure I’ll feel it more in the morning,” he said. ... Polesitter and series rookie Dylan Sillman finished third. ... Besides the red-flag cleanup for Sobbing's wreck, five cautions slowed the action, including for a pileup involving several cars in turn four with Brian Kosiski's car briefly airborne. ... Other cautions were for a slowing Gabe Umbarger (lap 3), frontstretch scrapes for Jesse Glenz (lap 4) and Josh Leonard (lap 15) and when Blake Swenson hit the turn-two wall on lap 20. ... Kyle Berck won the afternoon’s rain-delayed program, pocketing $5,053 for his 98th career series victory.
