Jordy Nipper takes the checkers for his first SAS victory.
What won the race: Taking the lead from race-long pacesetter Zack Mitchell on lap 20, 11th-starting Jordy Nipper of Gray, Ga., led the final 21 laps to win Saturday's $10,000 Georgia Rumble at Cochran Motor Speedway. Nipper nabbed his first career Southern All Star Dirt Racing Series victory and the richest payday of his career.
Quotable: "When we fired off there, I was on the bottom, and when we went green through (turns) one and two, I think I passed two or three (cars). Like when we had that first caution, I think I was running sixth already," Nipper said. "The first few laps I could rip around the top in (turns) three and four, but once I found that bottom, way, way low, I guess that was my bread and butter."
Key notes: Nipper becomes the seventh driver to earn his first Southern All Stars feature victory this season, joining Billy Franklin, Dillon Tidmore, Josh Rice, Austin Neely, Oakley Johns and Jamie Oliver. ... Hometown racer and 15th-starting Wil Herrington marched steadily through the field along with Nipper, taking the runner-up spot on lap 24 and finishing 2.272 seconds back. ... Zack Mitchell led the first 19 laps from the pole before being overtaken by Nipper and Herrington, settling for third. ... Defending race winner Pearson Lee Williams advanced from 14th and passed for fourth on the final lap. ... Crate Racin' USA points leader Mark Whitener made a rare Super Late Model start, improving one position and finishing sixth. ... Gavin Cowan gained seven spots and completed the top 10. ... Jimmy Sharpe Jr. ran as high as second in the early laps before drawing the third and final caution when he slowed on lap 11; Sharpe was unable to continue. ... Saturday's 24-minute feature saw 11 competitors complete 40 laps and 15 running at the finish.
On the move: Runner-up Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, Ga., started 15th.
Winner's sponsors: Nipper’s Longhorn Chassis by Wesley Page carries sponsorship from Scotty’s Muffler, M&S Concrete, Inc., Central Fence Co., VP Racing Fuels, NRI Machining, Brown Heating & Air and Topnotch Kustom Koncepts.
