Devin Moran gives a thumbs-up after winning his fifth career feature at Volusia.
What won the race: Inheriting the point when race-long pacesetter Bobby Pierce slowed with a broken fuel line on a lap-17 restart attempt, fifth-starting Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, paced the remaining circuits to win Tuesday's 25-lap opener of the 53rd annual Federated Auto Parts DIRTcar Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park. Moran earned $7,000 for his fifth career victory at the half-mile oval and his 10th triumph all-time in Georgia-Florida Speedweeks action.
Quotable: “I felt like the car was really, really good and I got a good restart, then I just saw like a flame come out of (Pierce’s) hood,” Moran said. “I don’t know what happened. I wish we could’ve raced it out ... 'ya know, me and Bobby are buds and he was really good, I felt like I was even better. It’s awesome to be back in victory lane for sure.”
Key notes: The second-starting Pierce led the first 17 laps before a fuel line broke on his carburetor, shooting raw fuel onto the distributor and creating a fire; as a result, Pierce slowed abruptly in turn four as the green flag flew, setting off a chain-reaction tangle that collected nine other cars and caused a 15-minute red flag for cleanup. ... The late-race melee ended the night for Pierce, Mike Marlar, Hudson O'Neal, Nick Hoffman, Chase Junghans and Tyler Bruening; O'Neal went to the hospital to have his left hand examined for possible injury. ... Ninth-starting Ricky Thornton Jr. moved into the runner-up spot on the lap-17 restart and trailed Moran the rest of the way, finishing 1.407 seconds back. ... Pole-starting Kyle Bronson finished third; he rallied after falling outside the top 10 by the race's midway point. ... Cade Dillard improved seven positions and completed the top five. ... Chris Madden appeared poised to challenge Moran for the lead on the lap-17, but the red flag hampered his hard-compound tire choice; he hopped the turn-four cushion and faded to eighth. ... Brandon Sheppard, Ashton Winger, Dennis Erb Jr. and Tyler Erb all finished the race after sustaining damage in the lap-17 pileup. ... After slowing to draw the race's first caution on lap one, Jordan Koehler rebounded to finish 13th. ... Dale McDowell slowed running 10th to bring out the second yellow on lap 12. ... The third and fourth stoppages occurred when Parker Martin slowed on lap 17 followed by a solo-spin by Ethan Dotson on the ensuing restart. ... The feature lasted 31 minutes, with 12 competitors completing 25 laps.
On the move: Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., started 20th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Moran’s Double Down Motorsports Longhorn Chassis carries a Clements Race Engine and sponsorship from Lazydays RV, Big River Steel, McHugh Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram Ram Fiat, CarSourceAuto.com, Red Oak Pub, C&W Trucking & Sons, Inc., Bomag, Southeastern Equipment, VP Race Fuels, Eibach Springs, Bilstein Shocks, Accu-Force Dynos, Lucas Oil Products, Smoky Mountain Speedway, Haulin’ Haskel’s, Lincoln Smith Racing, GE Auto Sales and WME Detailing.

Pre-race notes

After a thin line of heavy rain crossed the area to postpone Monday’s opening-night DIRTcar Late Model and USAC sprint car features, Tuesday has brought dry but significantly cooler conditions with an afternoon high temperature only reaching into the mid-60s. … The field for Tuesday’s $7,000-to-win Late Model program numbers 46, down one from Monday’s show and five from last year’s Tuesday DIRTcar Nationals action. … Monday entrants not competing tonight are Stacy Boles of Clinton, Tenn., and Dustin Walker of Polk, Mo., while teenager Parker Martin of Milledgeville, Ga., is making his first start of the week. … Todd Cooney of Des Moines, Iowa, who finished third in a Monday heat, is his team’s lone entrant for the second straight with his teammate Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, again sitting out. … Dylan Thompson of Paducah, Ky., has some high-profile mechanical assistance with former DIRTcar national champion Terry English of Benton, Ky., in his pit area. English’s son, Tanner, and his Viper Motorsports team opted to skip this year’s DIRTcar Nationals. … Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., won last year’s Tuesday feature. Still seeking his first victory of 2024 Georgia-Florida Speedweeks, the 49-year-old McCreadie owns as much — or perhaps more — Volusia experience than anyone in the field; he’s entered every Late Model edition of the DIRTcar Nationals since 2004 except ’09 when he was sidelined by a back injury suffered in the previous month’s Chili Bowl Midget Nationals, and he’s run a big-block modified in more than half-dozen installments of the event.
