Mike Marlar picked up $30,000 for his Volunteer Speedway victory.
What won the race: Inheriting the top spot from Dale McDowell after the leader slowed on lap 14 with a broken driveshaft, fourth-starting Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., rolled the remainder of the distance to capture Saturday's 60-lap XR Super Series-sanctioned Spring Thaw at Volunteer Speedway. Marlar repelled Devin Moran’s late challenge to claim $30,000 for his first career series win.
Key notes: Marlar beat Moran to the finish line by 0.216 of a second for his third overall victory of the 2024 season. ... Moran gained control of second from Jonathan Davenport on lap 31 and steadily closed on Marlar, but his last-lap bid fell short. … Davenport settled for third place after running second for laps 15-28 and lap 30. … Chris Ferguson ran fourth for the final 12 laps after overtaking Daulton Wilson, who finished fifth. … McDowell's broken driveshaft on lap 14 — after he led from the start of the race — brought out the second caution flag. … Other cautions were caused by Kaede Loude, who slowed on lap 12 and a tangle involving Brandon Overton and Jimmy Owens on the lap-14 restart. … Ricky Thornton Jr. pitted during the caution period following the Overton/Owens incident while running seventh. He returned and finished ninth. ... The 18th annual Spring Thaw was originally slated to start Friday, but the $12,000-to-win opener was moved to Sunday due to unfavorable weather. ... Saturday's feature lasted 23 minutes, with 11 competitors completing the distance and 15 running at the finish.
On the move: Tyler Erb of New Waverly, Texas, started 23rd and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Marlar’s Skyline Motorsports Longhorn Chassis carries sponsorship from Bruening Rock Products, Skyline Materials, Truck Country, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Olson Explosives, Bennett Explosives, Petroff Towing, Can-Am Auto Salvage, Brown’s Heavy Equipment, VP Racing Fuels, Bilstein and Capital Signs.
