Ryan Gustin takes the checkers ahead of Brandon Sheppard.
What won the race: Becoming the third leader with two laps remaining, ninth-starting Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, topped World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series points leader Brandon Sheppard in a late lead-swapping duel for a $6,000 USA Nationals preliminary victory at Cedar Lake Speedway. Sheppard led laps 18-23 while fellow front-row starter Jonathan Davenport led the first 17 laps and finished third in the nightcap of a preliminary doubleheader ahead of Saturday's 100-lapper. Bobby Pierce's bid for a record-setting seventh straight WoO victory ended in a lap-five wreck in turn four.
Quotable: "I just give it hell and hope you don't eat the fence," Gustin said. "I about hit it a couple of times down there. I'd get to the center and get (close to it). It was definitely elbows up. Hopefully, we don't have to do that for 100 laps."
Key notes: Ryan Gustin notched his third WoO victory of the season and eighth of his career. ... His previous 2024 wins came on May 4 at Mississippi Thunder Speedway in Fountain City, Wis., and July 5 at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn. ... Nick Hoffman was running third when he had a lap-seven flat tire. ... Four cautions slowed the feature, the second when Bobby Pierce got hung up with Cade Dillard in turn four with both cars coming to a stop when Max McLaughlin piled into the lap-five mess. ... A lap-nine caution appeared when Tim McCreadie spun exiting turn two after contact with Hudson O'Neal. ... A lap-seven caution appeared for Tyler Erb's turn-four spin. ... The first flew for Brent Larson's opening-lap spin. ... In consolation race action, WoO rookie Tristan Chamberlain endured a vicious rollover accident; he was OK except for a mild headache. ... Aaron Marrant just missed his first WoO start when Mike Marlar stole the final transfer spot from him late in the second consy. ... Capturing his record-tying sixth consecutive series feature, Bobby Pierce won Friday afternoon's opening prelim, a race postponed Thursday by wet track conditions. ... Ricky Weiss picked up $2,500 by winning the Fans Fund dash that closed Friday's action.
On the move: Winner Ryan Gustin started ninth.
