Tyler Peterson celebrates his fourth WISSOTA Challenge Series victory.
What won the race: Sneaking by race-long pacesetter Jake Redetzke with an outside move exiting turn four, seventh-starting Tyler Peterson of Hickson, N.D., led the final five laps to win Tuesday's $2,500 XR Northern Storm opener at Ogilvie Raceway. Peterson cut into Redetzke's 2.332 second advantage with 19 laps remaining and beat him to the checkers by 1.720 seconds to grab his seventh career Structural Buildings WISSOTA Challenge Series victory and his fourth of the season.
Quotable: “Man (it took) a lot of patience, I knew I was good about halfway through," Peterson said. “It’s the lapped traffic, it makes or breaks a race and we were fortunate enough to get through the holes. Usually I’m crying the blues when there’s any holes in the racetrack, but this Rocket with Fox Shox went right through them tonight. Hell of a track, I know they got an obscene amount of rain, so pretty damn good.”
Key notes: Peterson takes control of the series points lead, as he and Cole Searing now have four wins apiece thus far. Searing could only work his way to 15th after utilizing a provisional starting position. ... Pole-starting Rick Niemi never slipped below fourth and reclaimed third when James Giossi suffered race-ending mechanical failure on lap 36. ... Division rookie Shane Sabraski improved five positions and placed fourth in his first race back after a mild heart attack. ... Billy Kendall III pursued Redetzke between laps 3-14 before fading to fifth. ... The 40-lapper was completed without incident and lasted just 12 minutes, with 17 starters completing the distance and 21 running at the checkers. ... The biggest incident came in the third heat race when Josh Zimpel and Ryan Corbett made contact entering turn one while battling for third, sending Corbett's car flipping multiple times before landing on his right side, collecting Andy Nezworski; Corbett was uninjured and climbed from his mangled car but he and Nezworski were done for the night.
On the move: Kevin Burdick of Proctor, Minn., started 12th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Peterson’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Corky Thomas Race Engine and carries sponsorship from Enclave, Quick-Lift by TP Fabricating, Northwest Auto Body, Fastenal, Aggressive Towing, AllFab Railings & Metalworks, Powdercoat Specialists, Fox Racing Shox and Slider Shots Media.
