Oakley Johns flashes under the checkers to steal the $6,000 Gobbler victory.
What won the race: Slipping by race-long leader Tanner English when a lapped car nearly spun in front of him, fourth-starting Oakley Johns of Hohenwald, Tenn., led laps 39-40 of Saturday's 36th annual Gobbler at Duck River Raceway Park. Johns beat English to the checkers by 0.903 of a second, adding another $6,000 to his $6,000 victory a week earlier at his hometown Tennessee National Raceway.
Key notes: John notched his fourth overall victory of the season. ... Johns nearly edged Tanner English at the line to lead lap 27 before English pulled away until Sawyer Tinker nearly spun in front of him on lap 39, giving Johns the opportunity he needed. English checked up just enough, allowing Johns to power by him on the bottom out of turn two and speed to the win. ... Tinker appeared to over-rotate at the turn one entrance, then retired to the infield. ... Sam Seawright trailed English from lap 11 until Johns slid by him for second on the lap-20 restart; Seawright settled for third. ... Seventh-starting Jadon Frame took fourth from Josh Putnam on lap 32. ... The second-starting Putnam challenged English on the opening lap before slipping to seventh. ... Dalton Cook improved 13 spots and rounded out the top 10. ... The race's lone caution came on lap 20 when Brad Skinner slowed with heavy right-rear damage and pulled off in 22nd. ... The 40-lapper lasted 12 minutes with 14 starters completing the distance. ... The race was originally scheduled to pay $15,000-to-win on the XR Super Series before track and series officials agreed to drop the sanctioning at the 11th hour, citing the cool weather.
On the move: Ray Cook of Brasstown, N.C., started 16th and finished fifth.
