Joseph Joiner led all 40 laps for his first Cherokee victory.
What won the race: Winning for the first time at Cherokee Speedway, Joseph Joiner of Milton, Fla., repelled a mid-race challenge from Trent Ivey to lead all 40 laps en route to winning Sunday's $10,000 Mike Duvall Memorial. Joiner beat Ivey to the checkers by 1.166 seconds for his third feature victory of the season and his first away from his hometown Southern Raceway.
Quotable: “(I) just tried to keep this thing as straight as we could, I seen they was having some flats. I seen (Zack) Mitchell come by with his flat and I figured if anybody could get around here making 40 laps without burning the tire off, it would be him,” Joiner said. “At that point I kinda got worried, cause I knew we run 40 all the way in the rubber there, ya know. … hey we made it to the end there. Looking at (the tire), looks like we got some left, so we’ll take it."
Key notes: Joiner's two previous wins this season came at Milton, Fla.'s Southern Raceway on April 19, worth $10,000 on the Southern Thunder Super Dirt Series and March 21's $3,000 SAS-sanctioned Bash at the Beach prelim. ... Trent Ivey pressured Joiner on lap 27, cutting his advantage as low as 0.410 of a second, before fading back in the closing stages. ... Ross Bailes battled Ivey for the runner-up spot in the early going before settling in third. ... Brent Robinson slipped by Ben Watkins on lap 26 to finish fourth. ... Zack Mitchell pitted from fifth with a flat right-rear tire under a lap-35 caution; he could only recover to 10th. ... The third-starting Watkins, of Rock Hill, S.C., reclaimed fifth on the lap-35 restart. ... Teenager Beckham Malone slowed from 10th with a flat right rear on the 38th lap, drawing the race's second and final stoppage. He changed the tire and crossed the line in 16th. ... Chris Ferguson retired from 14th on lap 19. ... The event honors Mike Duvall, the first ballot National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame racer from Cowspen, S.C. ... The 40-lapper lasted 20 minutes, with 17 starters completing the distance. ... Casey Roberts scratched after time trials.
On the move: Steve Banal of Lincolnton, N.C., started 16th and finished ninth.
