Jonathan Davenport (49) repels Hudson O'Neal (71) at Spoon River.
What won the race: Fending off mid-race challenges from Hudson O'Neal, second-starting Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., led all 50 laps to win Wednesday's $20,000 FloRacing Night in America Series presented by Kubota feature at Spoon River Speedway. Davenport beat O'Neal to the line by 1.075 seconds for his fifth career FloRacing Series victory and his first since last Sept. 4 at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio, worth $20,000.
Quotable: “I was getting a little nervous, I knew Hudson (O’Neal) had softer left-side tires on than what I did and he could put around the infield there. I tried it, I was just too tight to turn down in there,” Davenport said. “Man it’s been a long time since I won in Illinois, I can’t even remember when the last time was. Awesome fans, awesome place. Like I said after my heat race, first time I laid eyes on this place it was almost like my favorite place in the south, East Alabama Motor Speedway. A lot of characteristics the same, the dirts totally different, but I still like these high-banked, fast racetracks.”
Key notes: Davenport notched his fourth full-field triumph of the season and his first outside the state of Florida; his last victory came in Feb. 15's $20,000 DIRTcar Nationals finale at Volusia Speedway Park. ... It's Davenport's first win in the state of Illinois since 2015's Prairie Dirt Classic at Fairbury Speedway, worth $26,000. ... Sixth-starting Hudson O'Neal grabbed second from Shannon Babb on lap 17 and erased Davenport's 2.745-second lead, cutting it as low as 0.213 of a second on a lap-34 restart before slipping back at the checkers. ... Babb faded to finish eighth. ... Bobby Pierce, winner of Tuesday's $20,000 opener at La Salle (Ill.) Speedway, finished third after banging doors with Dennis Erb Jr. and wrestling the spot away on the 35th lap. ... Erb gave way to Brian Shirley on lap 44 and settled for fifth. ... Ryan Unzicker improved six positions and placed seventh. ... Drake Troutman slowed from 16th with a flat right rear, drawing the race's only caution on lap 33. He finished 18th after changing the tire, the first driver one lap down. ... The main event lasted 16 minutes. ... Ethan Dotson, Tyler Erb, Brandon Overton and Tim McCreadie were among notable non-qualifiers.
On the move: Tanner English of Benton, Ky., started 19th and finished 10th.
