Devin Moran celebrates a $20,000 FloRacing Night in America victory at Lincoln Speedway.
What won the race: Running roughshod over the FloRacing Night in America presented by Kubota field, Devin Moran of Dresden, Ohio, dominated from start-to-finish to capture Thursday night’s 50-lap Illinois Speedweek third round at Lincoln Speedway. The 30-year-old standout led much of the distance in commanding fashion before beating Ricky Thornton Jr. by a more modest 0.552 of a second for the $20,000 triumph.
Quotable: “I was in the infield, just looking at the track, and my dad (Hall of Famer Donnie Moran) called and he said, ‘Hey, if you’re gonna win in Illinois, you better get up on the wheel and gas that son of a gun,’” Moran said. “And that’s what I did. This is a track I really wasn’t looking forward to, and that’s why you just got to stay positive and have a good mindset, because you never know what can happen.”
Key notes: Moran registered his second career FloRacing Night in America victory; his first came in the tour's second event ever on April 22, 2021, at Ohio's Atomic Speedway. ... Thornton wrestled control of second from Brandon Overton on lap 16 but never seriously challenged Moran, though he did draw closer in the final stages. … Brian Shirley finished third after taking the spot on lap 41 after Bobby Pierce bounced off turn four and clipped the wall in turn two, causing him to lose two spots and settle for fifth. … Ryan Gustin also slipped past the hobbled Pierce on the 41st lap, finishing fourth. … The race’s lone caution flag flew on lap 26 when Dan Ebert slowed with a flat tire. … Fast-timer Brandon Sheppard blew a right rear leading the first heat with six laps to go. He rallied in the B-main to finish third and move on to the feature. ... Moran became the fifth winner in as many FloRacing Night events contested at Lincoln. … Drivers experiencing heat-race trouble included Cody Overton (slapped turn four wall in Heat 2) and Drake Troutman (spun in turn four in Heat 3); both failed to qualify. ... Illinois Speedweek wraps up with Lucas Oil Series events on Friday at Farmer City Raceway ($25,000-to-win) and Saturday at Fairbury Speedway ($30,000-to-win).
On the move: Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill., started 21st and finished 10th.
