Chris Madden celebrates his second straight Southern Nationals victory.
What won the race: Sliding by race-long leader Garrett Smith on the 38th lap, polesitter Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., repelled a late-race challenge from Mike Marlar to win Monday night's 52-lap Scott Sexton Memorial at Volunteer Speedway. Madden, who overcame a lap-40 slide job attempt by Marlar, beat him by 1.308 seconds for the $7,552 payday and his second Schaeffer's Southern Nationals victory in the last three days.
Quotable: “We’d like to thank Vic (Hill) and Scott (Sexton’s) family for continuing this race for him. As well as (all the drivers) who got a chance to race with Scott back in his time,” Madden said. “Scott was a really good racer in this part of the country and everybody looked up to Scott and thought he was one to beat back in the day when we used to come here and race. Hats off to them for doing that. What a great race man, if you fans don’t like that, you don’t like racing.”
Key notes: Madden also won Saturday night's $10,053 stop at Wythe Raceway in Rural Retreat, Va. ... His 31st career Southern Nationals victory further extends his advantage on the tour's all-time win list. ... Seventh-starting Mike Marlar, fresh off a $15,000 World of Outlaws victory Saturday at Ohio's Sharon Speedway, pressured Madden in the late going before nearly tangling with a lapped car and fading back at the checkers. ... Mike's younger brother, Camaron Marlar, charged from 10th-to-third between laps 19-34, but settled for third in the closing stages. ... Camaron incidentally made contact with Dale McDowell, sending McDowell hard into the backstretch wall as they battled for third on lap 34, bringing out the race's lone stoppage. McDowell was unable to continue and credited with 18th. ... Second-starting Garrett Smith led the opening 37 laps before Madden worked his way by, then slipped to sixth in the final laps. ... Blake Brown improved five positions and finished seventh aboard Vic Hill's No. 1 entry. ... Beckham Malone overcame a hot lap crash to finish 13th after utilizing a provisional starting position. Malone made contact with Brandon Hardgrove who slowed abruptly after a fire ignited under his hood; both drivers were OK, but Hardgrove scratched for the night. ... Jordon Horton pulled off before taking the green. ... The event honored Scott Sexton, the late Volunteer track champion and driver of the No. 52 Dirt Late Model who amassed more than 200 feature wins in his storied career. Sexton died in 2013 at the age of 46. ... The 52-lapper lasted just shy of 17 minutes, with 12 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Camaron Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., started 15th and finished third.
