Bobby Pierce celebrates his debut victory at Shelby County Speedway.
What won the race: Sliding by Jonathan Davenport and Ricky Thornton Jr. to assume command on lap 40, seventh-starting Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., held off Brandon Sheppard in the closing circuit to win Tuesday's Kosiski Family 53 at Shelby County Speedway. Pierce led the final 14 laps and beat Sheppard to the finish line by 1.249 seconds, earning $25,053 for his second Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series victory of the season and the 23rd full-field triumph of his career on the national tour.
Quotable: “First off, I gotta say thank you Shelby County Speedway — awesome awesome racetrack — (and) all these fans for coming out. A packed house, that’s awesome,” Pierce said. “I kinda had to make some of the holes myself with the sliders. Those were just like death sliders there. I knew I kinda had to make (my competitors) check up. We just had to get something going. We just had such a consistent line of cars that were running the top.”
Key notes: Pierce recorded his 21st overall win of the season. ... Running primarily on the bottom, the 12th-starting Sheppard took second from Thornton on lap 42 and showed his nose inside Pierce a couple of times in the closing laps but couldn't truly challenge for the lead. ... Thornton made a third-to-first move on lap 37, sliding by Pierce and Jonathan Davenport to lead three laps before Pierce took control. ... Davenport led the opening 36 laps, fighting off multiple challenges from Pierce before Thornton's bold move; J.D. settled for fifth. ... Provisional starter Hudson O'Neal overcame fuel pickup issues in his heat race to finish fourth. ... Tenth-starting Brandon Overton worked his way as high as third and was challenging Thornton for second before a lap-15 caution slowed his progress. He slipped to sixth. ... Polesitter Garrett Alberson faded to finish seventh. ... The race was slowed by five cautions, the first coming for Donald McIntosh's lap-three spin. He rebounded to finish 13th. ... Dan Ebert had his first of two spins on lap nine, with the second coming on lap 49. He soldiered to a 16th-place result. ... Derrick Stewart and Spencer Hughes tangled on lap 15 for the third slowdown. Stewart retired, while Hughes continued until retiring on lap 48 and was credited with 19th. ... Blair Nothdurft spun from 17th for the fifth and final caution on lap 50; he placed 15th, the final starter to complete 53 laps. ... The event honored the entire Kosiski family, a name synonymous with Dirt Late Model racing success in the Midwest. ... The race lasted 26 minutes, with 17 starters running at the checkers.
On the move: Hudson O'Neal of Martinsville, Ind., started 23rd and finished fourth.
