Josh Rice takes the checkers in the Steel Block World Championship.
What won the race: Overcoming a few restarts sprinkled throughout the 25-lapper, Josh Rice of Crittenden, Ky., earned a flag-to-flag victory in the Burlile Performance Ohio Valley Steel Block Series portion of Saturday's 45th annual Dirt Track World Championship at Eldora Speedway. Rice beat Tyler Carpenter to the line by 1.7 seconds for the $5,000 payday, his first career Ohio Valley Series victory and 11th overall win of the season.
Quotable: “It’s really cool (to win at Eldora), I know this race means a lot to (car owner Bruce Kane). Hats off to him for letting me drive it,” Rice said before later adding, “I didn’t really touch it, the only thing I did was mount a seat in it and get comfortable. It’s kind of a handful bringing two cars to these deals and I wish mine drove like this thing, this thing is unreal.”
Key notes: Rice recorded his second victory of the month after winning Oct. 11 in local Super Late Models at Ohio's Atomic Speedway, aboard a JRR Motorsports entry. ... Rice finished 19th in the night's earlier Lucas Oil Series-sanctioned 100-lap DTWC feature after retiring on the 76th lap. ... Reigning Steel Block World Championship winner Tyler Carpenter took second from Braeden Dillinger after a lap-nine restart and trailed Rice the rest of the way, but never truly challenged. ... Russell Erwin prevailed in third after a back-and-forth battle with Dillinger in the late stages; Dillinger, who pursued Rice the opening 10 laps, settled for fourth. ... Twelfth-starting K.C. Burdette rounded out the top five after passing Clay Harris on a lap-19 restart, relegating Harris to sixth. ... Tyler Bare climbed seven spots to finish eighth. ... Zach Milbee challenged Harris for fifth in the early going before slipping to 11th at the checkers, clinching his fifth career Ohio Valley Series title (2020, '22-'25). ... Three cautions slowed the action, the final one came on lap 19 when Steven Dotson came up lame down the frontstretch and retired. ... The first yellow flag flew for Ted Johnson Jr.'s turn-one spin on lap nine, then a subsequent turn-one spin by Oliver Gentry slowed the action on the ensuing restart attempt. Gentry continued to finish 18th. ... The race lasted 17 minutes with with 22 starters completing 25 laps.
On the move: Corey DeLancey of Parkersburg, W.Va., started 18th and finished ninth.
