Hayden Cardwell celebrates a $30,000 victory at All-Tech Raceway.
What won the race: Taking control from Cody Overton just before he slowed and pulled off on lap 38, fifth-starting Hayden Cardwell of Knoxville, Tenn., led the final 31 laps of Saturday's 30th annual Powell Family Memorial at All-Tech Raceway. Cardwell beat Tyler Millwood to the checkers by 2.572 seconds for the $30,000 604 Crate Late Model payday, his most lucrative career victory and ninth feature win of the season.
Key notes: Cardwell collected his second special event of the season, adding to Aug. 2's Dylan Kennedy Memorial at Wartburg (Tenn.) Speedway, worth $12,037 (his previous career high) in unsanctioned Limited Late Models. ... Four of his nine overall wins have come at I-75 Raceway in Sweetwater, Tenn. ... Sixth-starting Cody Overton led 21 laps (16-36) then slowed and pulled off on the 38th lap after losing control to Cardwell. He was credited with 20th in the final rundown. ... Twelfth-starting Tyler Millwood inherited second when Overton slowed, but never truly challenged Cardwell over the race's second half. ... Tenth-starting Wil Herrington worked his way as high as fourth by lap seven, then slipped as low as sixth before rebounding to take third from Ross Bailes on lap 58. ... Layton Sullivan and Bubba Roling both slipped by Bailes in the late going, leaving Bailes settling for sixth after leading the opening 15 laps. ... Mark Whitener was a quiet non-factor in finishing eighth, the final starter to complete 67 laps. ... Ches Chester passed Austin Yarbrough for ninth on the final lap, relegating Yarbrough to 10th. ... Track champ Garret Stewart placed 13th, six spots ahead of his closest title contender, Brandon Wells. ... Trent Ivey retired from 16th on the 42nd lap and was credited with 18th. ... The race was slowed by two cautions in the opening three laps, then ran green the final 64 circuits; the first stoppage came on the opening start attempt and the second when Bo Allen retired on lap three. ... The event paid tribute to James Powell III, of Astor, Fla., a former driver who lost six family members in a plane crash 30 years ago. ... The 67-lap race lasted 32 minutes with 15 starters running at the checkers.
On the move: Runner up Tyler Millwood of Kingston, Ga., started 12th.
