What won the race: Outdueling early leader Dustin Linville and maintaining control through a lap-25 caution, second-starting Skylar Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., led the final 27 laps of Saturday's 50-lap King of the Mountain feature, earning $10,000 at Kentucky's Thunder Mountain Speedway. Marlar beat Linville by 1.260 seconds for his fourth 604 Crate Late Model victory at Thunder Mountain and 13th overall win of the season.
Quotable: “Our goal was 15 (wins) this year, so it’s winding down, we ain’t got many more chances,” Marlar said. “Me and (Dustin) Linville been racing together for 20 years I guess and there’s not too many people around this regional level that can race (like that), man we had that thing in some tight spots. I guess he ended up second, congratulations to him, he drove a good race and he raced me clean.”
Key notes: Skylar Marlar, the younger brother of Mike Marlar, earned his second victory of the weekend after winning Friday in 604 Crate action at Kentucky's Ponderosa Speedway, worth $3,000. ... Marlar adds to his July 5 and Sept. 13 Best Plumber 604 Racing Series wins at Thunder Mountain, each worth $2,000. ... His other Thunder Mountain win came May 24 in local 604 Crates. ... Dustin Linville led the opening 23 laps from the pole before Marlar slipped by him at the exit of turn four to complete the 24th lap. Linville appeared to regain command on lap 25, only to have his highside move negated by the second caution; he remained within striking distance of Marlar over the race's second half, but never threatened again. ... Fourth-starting Cameron Weaver held third for all 50 laps. ... Track champ Logan Walls finished fourth after taking the spot from Brad Seagle on lap 44, relegating Seagle to fifth. ... The race was slowed by four incidents, the most significant required a 15-minute red flag for cleanup after fourth-running Jared Delk slammed and climbed over the turn-three wall, ending up outside the track's confines. Delk was OK but credited 24th as the first retiree. ... Evin Hinkle spun in turn four for the lap-25 caution. ... The third yellow flag flew on lap 32 when Gary Carter slowed and pulled off. ... Seventh-running Greg Martin retired under the lap-32 caution. ... Drew Kennedy spun from 11th on the 36th lap after apparent contact from Oscar McCown sent him spinning on the frontstretch. Kennedy spun his rear wheels in frustration before pulling into the infield. ... The King of the Mountain feature, coined as the most lucrative event in track history, lasted 40 minutes with 12 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Tommy Bailey of Corbin, Ky., started 15th and finished seventh.
