Cory Hedgecock celebrates his fourth Southern Thunder victory this season.
What won the race: Fighting off pressure from Dalton Cook over a couple late-race restarts, second-starting Cory Hedgecock of Loudon, Tenn., led all 50 laps for a dominant $10,097 victory in Saturday's Red Farmer Tribute at Talladega Short Track. Hedgecock beat Cook by 0.726 of a second at the line for his fourth Southern Thunder Super Dirt Series victory and 10th overall feature win of the season.
Quotable: “Last night was a real heartbreaker. I’m sure I didn’t have nothing for Zack (Mitchell), Zack was in another zip code, but that (19th-place finish) was all my fault,” Hedgecock said. “Glad we could rebound and get this one, this one paid more (than Friday’s $5,038 opener), so … it was good.”
Key notes: Hedgecock, who swept last year's 604 Crate portion of the Red Farmer Tribute, captured his fourth Southern Thunder victory in his last five series starts. ... It's his third win since debuting a new Longhorn Chassis on Sept. 20 at Chatsworth's North Georgia Speedway, earning more than $25,000 over that span. ... Recently crowned series champ Dalton Cook grabbed second from Trey Mills on a lap-29 restart and kept pace with Hedgecock over the final 21 laps, but never truly contended. ... Trey Mills, winner of April's opening series doubleheader at Talladega and Friday's runner up, settled for third after trailing Hedgecock from laps 2-28. ... Sam Seawright took fourth from World of Outlaws regular Brent Larson on the lap-29 restart, relegating Larson to fifth. ... Zack Mitchell, winner of Friday's $5,038 opener, challenged Dalton Cook for fourth in the early going until he slapped the turn-two wall on lap 18, dropping him to sixth. ... Polesitter Dillon Tidmore slipped to seventh. ... The race was slowed by five times, the final caution coming on lap 42 when eighth-running T.J. Britain slowed down the frontstretch. He did not continue and was credited with 17th. ... Jordan Rodabaugh slowed for cautions on lap nine and 29 before retiring. ... Caden Mullinax drew the second slowdown on lap eight when he slowed from 17th and pulled off. ... Jason Lively's flat left-rear tire drew the opening stoppage for the second consecutive night. ... Provisional starter Josh Putnam retired on lap five after attempting to recover from a broken tie rod when he slammed the turn-one wall in time trials. ... The event paid tribute to 93-year-old Red Farmer, a NASCAR Hall of Famer and regular competitor in Talladega’s 602 Crate Late Model Sportsman division. ... The 50-lapper lasted 31 minutes with 13 starters completing the distance.
On the move: Sam Seawright of Rainsville, Ala., started 20th and finished fourth.
