Ethan Dotson celebrates his $10,000 victory in Wednesday's Wild West Shootout feature.
What won the race: Coming alive on a lap-22 restart, third-running Ethan Dotson of Bakersfield, Calif., blasted the outside lane to grab the lead from Bobby Pierce and drove away from the field to capture Wednesday’s 30-lap Rio Grande Waste Services Wild West Shootout feature at Central Arizona Raceway. The race’s seventh starter beat Pierce to the finish line by 2.908 seconds to secure his first-ever triumph in the annual miniseries and a $10,000 payday.
Quotable: "I was hoping (Pierce) was gonna go in there and run the bottom,” Dotson said. “Before that caution came out I got it rolling pretty good. Whenever Bobby drove in there and Terbo (Tyler Erb) picked the bottom (for the restart), I was like, ‘Oh, s—, I got a chance here.’ Just super pumped.”
Key notes: Dotson became the third driver from California to win a Wild West Shootout feature, joining Steve Drake and Kyle Larson. … Pierce led the race’s first 21 laps off the pole position before Sunday’s winner Hudson O’Neal seized command at lap 22 with a slider through turns three and four, but contact between the two entering turn one caused O’Neal to immediately slow on the backstretch with a flat left-rear tire. … Pierce held on to finish second despite battling nose damage from the encounter with O'Neal, who rallied to salvage 10th. ... Ryan Gustin came on strong in the closing circuits, reaching third on lap 27 after sitting fifth on the lap-22 restart. ... Three caution flags slowed the A-main starting with R.C. Whitwell’s spin on the first lap. … Mike Marlar was running outside the top 10 on lap 21 when he spun while battling with Justin Duty and one circuit later O’Neal triggered the final caution with his flat tire. … Cade Dillard was running 11th when he retired during the lap-21 caution period with oil trailing from his car. ... North Dakota's Tyler Peterson attempted to return to action after missing Sunday's show due to engine trouble, but his attempted repairs failed as more problems surfaced during qualifying and likely ended his week of competition. ... The miniseries continues Friday with a $10,000-to-win Late Model feature.
On the move: Ryan Gustin of Marshalltown, Iowa, started 14th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Dotson’s ASD Motorsports Longhorn Chassis carries sponsorship from Jarrett Rifles, Taco John’s, Torco USA, North Augusta Customs, Brad Benton Trucking, Contractor Services of Aiken, Excel Floor Covering, B&K Grading and Precise Sealcoating and Line Striping, VP Racing Fuels, North Augusta Customs, Torco Racing Oils, Boswell Oil and Poske's Performance Parts.
Points chase: After Wednesday: 1. Hudson O’Neal (225); T2. Ethan Dotson (216); T2. Ryan Gustin (216); T4. Bobby Pierce (207); T4. Garrett Alberson (207).
Current weather: Clear, 68°F
Car count: 42
Fast qualifier: Hudson O'Neal
Time: 15.130 seconds
Polesitter: Bobby Pierce
Heat race winners: Tyler Erb, Jonathan Davenport, Jake O'Neil, Bobby Pierce
