Michael Page (18x) races three-wide during Friday's prelim action.
What won the race: Overtaking majority leader Justin Williams with a turn-one slider on a lap-24 restart, 20th-starting Michael Page of Douglasville, Ga., led the final seven laps in winning Saturday's Rogers-Dabbs Crate Racin' USA Winter Shootout Series feature on the undercard of the seventh annual Sunshine Nationals at Volusia Speedway Park. Page beat Williams by 1.836 seconds for the $10,000 payday and his second Winter Shootout win of the season, adding to Jan. 3's $4,000 triumph on the Ice Bowl undercard at Talladega Short Track in Eastaboga, Ala.
Quotable: “(I) just can’t qualify man, every time we come here I have to come from the back,” Page said. “When it’s wide open, I feel like I have no motor then when it slicks off I feel like I have more motor than them, I don’t really understand it. Just don’t give up man, like I told them we’re here to have fun, win or lose, but we’re here to win, we come to win.”
Key notes: Second-starting Justin Williams led laps 5-23 before giving way to Page on the lap-24 restart and settling for second. ... Hayden Cardwell led the opening four laps from the pole before slipping as low as fifth then grabbing third on the lap-24 restart. ... Wil Herrington and Clay Harris each improved 18 positions, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively. ... Daulton Wilson ran as high as fourth in the early going before fading to 12th aboard Augie Burttram's No. c02 entry. ... The race was slowed by four incidents, the largest being a 15-minute red flag for a rollover crash by Pearson Lee Williams on a lap-three restart attempt; Williams made contact with Deisel Jones in turn two, with Williams spinning and collecting 11th-running Trynt Llloyd who slammed into Williams's stalled machine, pushing it onto its roof before it settled on top of the backstretch guardrail; both drivers were OK but done for the night. ... Jones, who entered Volusia as the Winter Shootout Series points leader, finished 10th. ... Other cautions included lap three for Tim Swartz's turn-one spin that saw him nose into the infield wall. ... Another on lap 15 when Trent Ivey slowed from 19th and retired; he won the night's earlier 20-lap 602 Crate Late Model feature, worth $3,000. ... The pivotal lap-24 restart was setup when Matt Henderson slowed from 12th aboard Cory Hedgecock's No. 23v BMF entry. ... Ty Giles retired from 14th under the lap-24 yellow. ... The 30-lapper lasted 35 minutes with 21 starters completing the distance.
