Chris Madden waves in victory lane at Cherokee Speedway.
What won the race: Leading all 41 laps of a rain-shortened feature, polesitter Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., earned $20,053 at Cherokee Speedway in capturing Saturday's Ginger Owens Memorial March Madness for the fifth time in his career. Madden was out front in the scheduled 60-lapper when rain hit during a lap-41 caution and grabbed the victory on the Southern All Stars and Schaeffer's Spring Nationals tours.
Quotable: “We had a great car last weekend and me and Brandon (Overton) just had a freak deal that happened right there at the end and took him out and took me out,” Madden said recalling, recalling the previous Saturday’s World of Outlaws Late Model Series event at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, Tenn. “It took us out of a great run there, but we’re back here in victory lane this weekend, so that says a lot for our team and we’ll keep working hard. We’re gonna get better and better.”
Key notes: Madden notched his second victory of the season. His first came Jan. 22 at Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., on the World of Outlaws Late Model Series. ... Madden also had March Madness victories in 2006, '16, '18 and '22. ... He notched his 53rd Southern All Star victory and seventh with the Spring Nationals. ... Five cautions slowed the action, the first on the 17th lap for fifth-running Chris Ferguson's flat tire. ... On the 26th lap, eighth-running Jeremy Steele slowed (he debuted in the Billy Hicks Racing No. 79). ... Jake Jackson slowed for a lap-32 yellow. ... Chris Ferguson slowed again on lap 37. ... Two laps later, Steve Banal slowed and retired (Carson Ferguson had a flat tire simultaneously); a brief rain shower caused a 10-minute delay during the caution. ... On the 41st lap, Garrett Smith slowed with a flat tire and rain returned before another lap could be completed. ... Officials moved the Super Late Model feature up in the schedule to try to beat approaching weather, but the 9 p.m. start wasn't enough to run the 60-lap distance. ... March Madness honors Ginger Owens, the late scorer at Cherokee who died in 2019. ... Layton Sullivan won the Crate Late Model feature.
On the move: Alex Vance of Waynesville, N.C., started 19th and finished ninth.
