Ryan Unzicker's team celebrates Wednesday at Macon Speedway.
What won the race: Taking advantage of Bobby Pierce's struggles in traffic, third-starting Ryan Unzicker of El Paso, Ill., led the final 12 laps Wednesday at Macon Speedway for a $5,000 victory in the Herald & Review 100. Jason Feger finished second while the eighth-starting Pierce, who battled for the lead with Brandon Sheppard for more than half the race, broke an axle late and finished seventh, the last car on the lead lap.
Quotable: "The car was really good; it was maneuverable. I could run the cushion and not to be too tight, run the middle and be a little bit free," Unzicker said. "It looked like (Pierce) was kind of married to the top and stuck behind that lapped car, and I was able to get up underneath of him and make the pass."
Key notes: Unzicker got his third victory of the season in 38 starts; his last triumph came May 22 at I-96 Speedway in Lake Odessa, Mich. ... Bobby Pierce was leading on lap 88 when he lost power entering turn one and got sideways trying to get under Steve Thorsten, dropping him to third as Unzicker and Feger went by before his car refired. ... Brandon Sheppard led most of the first 70 laps but slowed with a flat tire on lap 78 while running second; his car didn't perform as well as the rear spoiler was heavily damaged. ... Several minor cautions slowed the action for Kyle Logue (lap 52), Allen Murray (laps 20 and 44), Thorsten (lap 28) and Justin Reed (lap eight). ... The 35th annual Herald & Review 100, sponsored by the Decatur, Ill., newspaper, made up the rained out July 9 UMP DIRTcar Summernationals event. ... The Midwest Big 10 Series (also UMP DIRTcar-sanctioned) adopted the race as the richest event on the Ilinois minitour.
On the move: Five-time race winner Shannon Babb of Moweaqua, Ill., started 13th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Unzicker's Bob Pierce Race Car has Pro Power and is sponsored by Aftershock Decals & Designs, Appleton Rack & Pinion, Dyer's Top Rods, Keyser Mfg., Kingdon Frams Leman Paint Works, Quick Car Racing Products, Peterson Fluid Systems, Pro Tire and Automotive, RJR Transportation Co., R2C Competition Series Filters, VarisTEE Screenprinting and VP Racing Fuels.
