Jonathan Davenport (116) drives Randy Weaver's car to victory at Senoia.
What won the race: In a tight race with three leaders on a hooked-up new racing surface, third-starting Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., regained the lead from polesitter Chris Madden of Gray Court, S.C., on lap 26 of 40 for a $4,000 Old Man's Garage Spring Nationals victory at Senoia Raceway. Davenport made a guest appearance in the No. 116 Longhorn Chassis of Tennessee driver Randy Weaver, surviving lap-18 contact with Madden at the flagstand en route to victory.
Quotable: "I'm not done racing by any means, but we've talked for three or four years about him driving our car," Randy Weaver said about Davenport driving his car. "He's got eight or 10 open dates on his schedule, and we're working on a lot of the same stuff, so it made sense to finally work together. It's always good to have another driver's outlook on your cars, and sometimes it's good just to stand and watch your own car perform on the racetrack to see how it's acting."
Key notes: Davenport, who last competed at Senoia 15 years earlier in winning a legends race on asphalt, scored his first career Spring Nationals victory and the ninth win overall of 2016. … Lap leaders: Madden 1-11, 17-25; Kenny Collins 12; Davenport 13-16, 26-40. ... Madden lost the lead to Collins on a restart when his car briefly bogged down in turn two, dropping him from first to fourth temporarily. ... The race was slowed three by cautions on laps 11 (Shanon Buckingham spin), 16, 31 (David Payne spin). … Scott Bloomquist passed on taking a series provisional. … Madden lowered the track record in time trials. … Spring Nationals competitors return to Senoia on Saturday the wrap up the weekend doubleheader with a $6,000-to-win event; Weaver is expected to be behind the wheel of the No. 116.
On the move: Hometown driver Clint Smith started 20th and finished 11th.
Winner's sponsors: Davenport drove Randy Weaver's No. 116 Outlaw Racing Southeast Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Ford engine and sponsored by Stone Land Cleaning and Excavating, Mission Transport, A.F. Stone Professional Medical Services and The Bailey Company.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., leads Spring Nationals points over Randy Weaver and Mike Marlar. Bloomquist isn't expected to follow the series.
