Gregg Satterlee takes the checkers at Winchester.
What won the race: Taking the lead on lap 20 of the 50-lap feature, outside-polesitter Gregg Satterlee of Indiana, Pa., raced to his first career Ultimate Super Late Model Series victory in Saturday night's Red Nininger Memorial at Winchester Speedway. Satterlee grabbed the top spot from polesitter Dennis Franklin of Gaffne, S.C., and then outran sixth-starting Jason Covert of York Haven, Pa., to collect the $5,000 victory in the second round of the inaugural Colonial Clash miniseries.
Quotable: “This place is definitely one of my favorite places to come race at, especially when it’s like this,” Satterlee said. “The last couple times we’ve been here it’s been real slow and slick … I definitely have to tip my hat to (promoter) Greg (Gunter) for preparing a good racetrack tonight. There was a little bit of cushion on both ends and you can pass.”
Key notes: Satterlee's triumph was his first since his appeal of penalties he received for a failed tire test during the June 9-11 Dream XXII at Eldora Speedway was upheld by DIRTcar officials. ... The race was slowed by five cautions. ... Runner-up Covert conceded that Satterlee "was the class of the field." ... Dale Hollidge, who won the Colonial Clash opener last month at Georgetown (Del.) Speedway, saw his personal five-race win streak end with a third-place finish. He was hampered by a broken header that sapped some power from his car midway through the feature. ... Kenny Moreland was running in the top 10 when he spun on lap 34. ... Kyle Hardy's first start back with a family-owned effort was a rough one. He lost his qualifying time to a light weigh-in and retired from the feature with eight laps remaining. ... Series action continues Sunday at Winchester's sister track, Potomac Speedway in Budds Creek, Md.
On the move: Mark Pettyjohn of Milton, Del., advanced from the 19th starting spot to finish 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Satterlee's Rocket XR1 Chassis is powered by a Durham Racing Engine and carries sponsorship from Satterlee Petroleum Distributors, Keyser Manufacturing, Valvoline, Classic lnk, AAW Wraps, Hoosier Racing Tires, and VP Racing Fuels.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Kenny Collins of Colbert, Ga., led the Ultimate standings with 249 points over Dennis Franklin (241).
