Tim Dohm emerges as the $3,000 Topless 50 winner at Tyler County.
What won the race: Tim Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., continued his standout 2016 season Friday night, kicking off the unsanctioned Mega 100 weekend with a $3,000 victory in the Topless 50. The 55-year-old veteran beat Derek Doll of Greenwood, W.Va., to the finish line.
Quotable: "I just love this racetrack," Dohm said in victory lane. "It’s my favorite racetrack. It suits me and suits the car. It’s just ... I wish we could not get into any lapped cars. It’d make it a whole lot easier on my heart. It was killing me."
Key notes: Dohm won his second special event in six weeks at Tyler County; he captured his first-ever World of Outlaws feature at the quarter-mile oval on May 29. ... Both Doll and Corey Conley, who battled hard for second late, had good-natured barbs for Dohm after the race. Doll said with a smile, "I don’t know why Tim had to show up for just a $3,000-to-win race — I maybe could’ve had that one!"; Conley, meanwhile, laughed while saying, "Congratulations to Timmy … I don’t know what the hell that goofy hillbilly’s doing, but my god is he fast." ... Michael Lake, a 15-year-old from Uniontown, Pa., was bidding to challenge Dohm for the lead when he tangled with a lapped car and spun out of contention with 11 laps remaining. ... Sixth-place finisher Mason Zeigler had to restart at the rear of the field early in the feature after officials determined that he was at fault in a scrape that caused Lake to spin as they battled for second. By event rules Lake kept his spot. ... Saturday's Mega 100 weekend finale pays $5,000-to-win ... If Dohm also wins on Saturday night, he will receive a $2,000 bonus from ASi Racewear. ... The events were originally scheduled to be part of the now disbanded UFO Series.
On the move: Mason Zeigler of Chalk Hill, Pa., rallied to finish sixth after being forced to restart at the rear of the field early in the A-Main.
Winner's sponsors: Dohm's Swartz Race Car is powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by Octane Race Products, Melvin's Automatic Transmission Service and Dohm Cycle.
Points chase: Doll entered the weekend leading the track point standings (115 points) over Kyle Thomas (95).
Car count: 23
Heat race winners: Robbie Scott, Tim Dohm, Michael Lake
