Matt Ryan heads to a Deery Brothers victory at Dubuque.
What won the race: Earning his second career series victory, Matt Ryan of Davenport, Iowa, led all the way at Dubuque Speedway for a $2,000 Deery Brothers Summer Series. Ryan, who started outside the front row, turned back challenges from series points leader and runner-up Tyler Bruening for the victory.
Quotable: “Normally when I go to Dubuque, I’m a guardrail guy, but the car was good on the top side in my heat race. I thought if I’m starting second that I’d stay there. My goal was to stay on the cushion but keep it out of the fence," Ryan said. “Every restart we’d go into (turn) one and there’d be somebody on the bottom. I was pretty happy to be able to stay out in front of them.”
Key notes: Ryan picked up a $400 bonus from Sunoco for perfect series attendance. ... Ryan's previous series victory came April 9, 2011, at 34 Raceway in West Burlington, Iowa. ... Ryan has weekly IMCA victories this season at Quad City Speedway in East Moline, Ill., Maquoketa (Iowa) Speedway and his hometown Davenport Speedway. ... Hometown driver Joel Callahan started 22nd and briefly grabbed the second spot, but he faltered after jumping the cushion multiple times. ... Reigning series champ Justin Kay retired with engine problems. ... Eric Pollard climbed the wall for a lap-30 yellow. ...
