CONCORD, N.C. (Oct. 27) — Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., and Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., were the fastest of 69 entries as the 10th annual Bad Boy Off Road World Finals got under way with Thursday’s double round of qualifying action at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.

Debuting a new black paint scheme, McCreadie blasted around the 4/10-mile oval, clocking a time of 14.761 seconds to top the charts for the first round of World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series time trials. The former series champion will start on the pole of the first of six heat races slated for Friday night.

“I want to win every race I’m in, but this is a success," McCreadie said of his qualifying efforts. "We could have issues the rest of the week, anything can happen. But to come here with this field of cars and be competitively fast, the weekend’s a success. Now we’re trying to add bonuses to it and hopefully win some races. It’s a lot of fun.

Among the quickest qualifiers in the first time trial session, Richards turned a lap of 14.876 seconds to clock the fastest overall time in the second round of qualifying. As the only qualifier breaking the 14-second bracket, the series points leader will be the polesitter for Saturday’s first heat race.

“We did exactly what we needed to do, go out there and get two good laps both days,” Richards said. “We changed a couple of things from last year and the car was fast in hot laps. So we just kind of left it alone and I just tried to work on my driving a little bit and moving around the track, and it responded. It was a good start."

The two qualifying rounds were part of the opening night of the three-day World Finals event, which includes the World of Outlaws Sprint Cars and the Super DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds.

The results of Thursdays’ time trials will be used to set the lineups for Friday and Saturday’s heat races. The first round determined the lineups for Friday’s action, while Saturday’s prelims were set by the second round. Both World of Outlaws features will pay $12,000 to the winner.

Thursday's time trial results:

Second round qualifying

Josh Richards topped the charts for Saturday’s World Finals program, clocking a time of 14.876 seconds. He was the lone driver to break the 14-second bracket in the second time trial session.

Richards will start on the pole of Saturday’s first heat race, while Tim McCreadie — the fastest qualifier in the second group — will be the polesitter for the fourth heat. Saturday’s other heat race polesitters are Chris Madden, Don O’Neal, Dale McDowell and Shane Clanton.

While several drivers did not report to the track during the second qualifying session, Jason Feger of Bloomington, Ill., was among drivers experiencing on-track issues. He was pushed to the infield before taking the white flag due to a broken transmission.

Pre-race notes

A field of 69 Dirt Late Models signed in for the qualifying program, a decrease of 17 cars from last year’s all-time World Finals high of 86 entries. It’s just the second time the event has drawn under 70 cars in its 10-year history; the previous instance was in 2011 when 66 cars were in competition. … In the wake of last year’s extremely long World Finals programs — including a nearly 3:30 a.m. finish to the Friday action after a late start due to weather and an outbreak of sprint car flips — the speedway now has a hard 11 p.m. curfew for the cessation of racing. In that vein, officials announced during the drivers’ meeting that no hot laps will be run on Friday and Saturday nights to save time as well as laps on the track surface. … Among first-time World Finals competitors are Nick Hoffman of Mooresville, N.C., who competed in last week’s open-wheel modified event at Charlotte; Southern All-Star Series champion Riley Hickman of Ooltewah, Tenn.; MLRA titlist Jesse Stovall of Billings, Mo.; Tyler Carpenter of Parkersburg, W.Va.; and Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., the 16-year-old son of former Lucas Oil champ Don O’Neal. … Jeremy Miller of Gettysburg, Pa., is making his first World Finals appearance since 2013. He retired from competition after that event but returning to the division this summer to drive the MBH Race Cars house car. … Also in the World Finals field for the first time since 2013 is Kenny Moreland of Waldorf, Md., who spent the past two years as a Charlotte spectator. … Dan Stone of Thompson, Pa., is behind the wheel of the Ron Coleman-owned Rocket No. 72. … Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., is making his first start in a new Longhorn Race Car that he’s tested twice in recent weeks. The Longhorn staff, including Justin Labonte, is working closely with McCreadie on the machine, which is powered by an engine from McCreadie’s Sweeteners Plus stable and carries a black paint scheme. … Steve Francis of Bowling Green, Ky., is driving one of fellow Kentuckian Justin Rattliff’s No. 16 machines. … Chub Frank of Bear Lake, Pa., still has the No. 41* on his car’s doors for the weekend. He switched to the number two weeks for the Dirt Track World Championship at Portsmouth (Ohio) Raceway Park to honor his long-time friend Mike Farr, the well-known shock rep who passed away at 65 earlier this month. … WoO Sprint Car champion Donny Schatz is pulling double-duty, splitting his time between sprint car and Dirt Late Model competition.

Pre-race setup

After nearly a two-month break, the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series returns to action at the Dirt Track at Charlotte for the season-ending Bad Boy Off Road World Finals. Joining Late Model competitors is the World of Outlaws Sprint Series and the Super DIRTcar Big-Block Modifieds.

Thursday’s program will include two rounds of qualifying, setting the lineups for Friday and Saturday’s heat races. Each of the weekend’s two feature events will pay $12,000 to the winner.

With the driver’s meeting complete, Thursday’s racing action is set to get under way around 4:45 p.m. DirtonDirt.com is offering live pay-per-view coverage of the weekend’s three-day event.
