Chris Ferguson survived this bounce in winning the Starrette Memorial.
What won the race: Chris Ferguson of Mount Holly, N.C., inherited the lead on lap 18 after a spirited battle with Brett Hamm of Newberry, S.C., when Hamm was eliminated with mechanical trouble and went on to register an emotional $5,022 victory in the 50-lap Jack Starrette Memorial at Modoc Raceway. Ferguson won the Ultimate Super Late Model event by 3.673 seconds over Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga.
Quotable: “This is awesome,” Ferguson said. “We got another one for Jack (Starrette). If it wasn’t for him I wouldn’t be here today. He’s the one who brought me to Super Late Model racing.”
Key notes: Ferguson was a winner for the third straight year in the Starrette Memorial, run in honor of the late Jack Starrette, a long-time team owner and sponsor who was inducted posthumously into the National Dirt Late Model Hall of Fame in 2013 as a Special Contributor to the Sport. Fergy was Starrette's driver at the time of his death in 2010 in a construction accident. ... The triumph was Ferguson's first of 2017 and the 10th of his career in Ultimate competition. ... Hamm led the race's first 17 laps before stopping on the track and getting pushed to the pits during a caution period for Zack Mitchell. ... Runner-up Davenport said he was pleased with the performance of his new Hatfield Ford engine. ... No heat races were run; the feature was aligned heads-up from time trials. ... With rough-and-tumble track conditions prevailing, only eight cars were running at the finish with seven drivers on the lead lap. ... The final caution flag came out on lap 29, giving Ferguson 21 consecutive green flag laps to the finish. ... Scott Shirey rolled his car on the homestretch on the feature's opening lap but escaped injury.
Winner's sponsors: Ferguson’s Rocket Chassis is powered by a Clements Racing Engine and sponsored by RPM Truck & Trailer Sales & Service, Live Oak Aesthetic and Family Dentistry, Champion, Langley Collision Center, Carver & Son’s Roofing and Keith’s Handyman Services.
