Ricky Weiss waves in victory lane after his Crossville victory.
What won the race: Fifth-starting Ricky Weiss of Headingley, Manitoba, slipped by a faltering Brandon Overton heading to the checkers Friday at Crossville Speedway for his first career Schaeffer Oil Spring Nationals victory. The second-starting Overton's car began slowing late in the race and Weiss went by at the top of the frontstretch, leaving Overton to settle for second. Weiss earned $4,000.
Quotable: "We just never gave up. We just kept trying to run our line ... I seen (Overton) slowing up with about two (laps) to go and going into (turn) three and the last corner, I went in a little deep and I thought I had a chance," Weiss said. "For a split second then I thought I gave it up. Then he didn't come off of (turn) four very good ... I don't know what the (margin of victory) was, but it was close."
Key notes: Weiss made slight contact with Overton in making the winning pass. ... Overton led 39 laps but his engine sputtered and eventually shut down exiting turn four on the final lap. He was trying win at the hometown track of one of his car's co-owners, Randy Weaver. "When we're hitting on all eight (cylinders), we're pretty good," Overton said. ... The race was slowed by seven cautions, including on the sixth lap when second-running Donald McIntosh tangled with a lapped car; McIntosh also spun on lap 26. ... The series made its first visit to Crossville and made up an April 21 rainout.
On the move: David Payne of Murphy, N.C., advanced from eighth to finish fourth.
