Bryce Davis earned $2,000 for his RUSH victory at Outlaw Speedway.
What won the race: Bryce Davis of Hornell, N.Y., outdueled Jeremy Wonderling to pick up the victory in the RUSH-sanctioned Gary Montgomery Memorial at Outlaw Speedway. After trading sliders with Wonderling midway through the 30-lapper, Davis made the winning pass on lap 24 and finally pulled away over the final laps to win. The victory was worth $2,000.
Quotable: "I haven't gotten chills like this from a race in a long time," said Davis. "I can't thank Jeremy (Wonderling) enough for running me clean like that. We ran a hell of a race. I'm speechless right now. That was awesome. I think that was the most risky race I've run in my lifetime. The bottom of (turns) three and four was the only place the track wasn't glazed over so I could get in there and get the right rear to stick pretty hard and get the drive off. That's what won us the race. My dad puts a ton of time into this race car. I have to thank my sponsors, everyone that helps me, my mom, brother, sister, and my wife and kids for allowing me to do this. This is just a huge team effort."
Key notes: The victory was the first RUSH Series victory for Davis this season. He won by 2.585 seconds. … Fourteen cars finished on the lead lap. ... The lead trio of Bryce Davis, Jeremy Wonderling and Wayne Robertson battled three-wide for the lead with Davis and Wonderling trading slide jobs lap after lap. … Jason Knowles led the race early, but his run came to an end when he got too high on the backstretch in lapped traffic on lap 13, slamming the wall and ending up over the track in turn three. … Jason Knowles led laps 1-12. Davis was the leader on laps 13-17, 19, 24-30 and Wonderling was credited with leading laps 18 and 20-23. ... The RUSH Dirt Late Model Series kicked off a weekend tripleheader at Outlaw Speedway’s 4/10ths mile oval. It was the series first-ever visit to Outlaw Speedway. … It was the first of a trio of races that will also take series drivers to Genesee Speedway in Batavia, N.Y. on Saturday and Eriez Speedway in Hammett, Pa., on Sunday. Each race pays $2,000 to win. … The event was in honor of the late Montgomery, an Olean, N.Y., native who was a well-known color commentator who had announcing stints with the Race of Champions, MRN Radio, and NASCAR events at Daytona, Watkins Glen, as well as calling weekly action at Spencer Speedway, Canandaigua, Weedsport and Rolling Wheels on the DIRT circuit. Montgomery also served as general manager at Canandaigua, and promoter at Dundee (now Outlaw Speedway) and Little Valley.
On the move: Sean Beardsley started 17th and improved 10 spots to seventh.
