Benji Hicks inherited the $3,000 Fastrak touring victory at VMS.
What won the race: Inheriting a victory when Ross Bailes of Clover, S.C., was light at the scales, Benji Hicks earned $3,000 in the Crate Late Model portion of Virginia Motor Speedway's USA 100. Bailes overtook Matthew Nance for the lead on the 20th of 40 laps and held until the finish, beating Hicks to the checkered flag by 0.551 seconds before weighing in light.
Quotable: “It was two years ago tonight that my Namaw passed away and she was my everything,” Hicks said. “This win tonight is for her. I tried to win the Bill Hicks Sr. Memorial last Friday night at 311 Motor Speedway, but finished third. Bill Hicks Sr. was my grandfather and my Namaw’s husband. Winning this race tonight with my family here is a pretty good consolation prize.”
Key notes: Hicks also won the Fastrak tour's opener at Toccoa (Ga.) Raceway on April 1. ... The 40-lap feature took 43 minutes to complete; fifteen drivers completed every lap. ... Hicks took second from Nance on lap 22 and crossed the line in the runner-up position. ... Nance steadily faded over the second half of the feature, ultimately finishing 9th. ... Walker Arthur ran second for the first 10 laps and was running among the top five when his night ended just past half way. ... The race was on the undercard of Saturday’s 60-lap, $20,000-to-win Ultimate Southeast Series event won by Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn. ... Fastrak's touring series returns to VMS Sept. 15-16 for the Fastrak World Championship Race.
On the move: After falling back as far as 10th in the feature's early stages, Ryan Montgomery of Fairmont, W.Va., rallied for a podium finish.
Winner's sponsors: Hicks drives a Longhorn Chassis sponsored by Auto Zone, South Main Street and T&K Enterprises.
Points chase: Jenson Ford of Piney Flats, Tenn., led the Fastrak standings entering the event.
