Wearing a cap like Tyler County legend Earl Hill wore, Derek Doll enjoys victory lane after his richest career victory.
What won the race: Taking the $7,000 victory after leader Zack Dohm had a flat tire with two laps remaining, polesitter Derek Doll of Greensburg, W.Va., collected his richest payday Sunday at Tyler County Speedway. Doll got an emotional victory in the Earl Hill Memorial, a race paying tribute to a legendary driver who piloted cars owned by Marshall Doll, who fields Derek's No. 87.
Quotable: "I'm not really an emotional person, but seriously when Zack got the flat, I started crying in the car," Doll said. "Once Zack got the lead I knew halfway through the race or so, (the surface) would rubber-up. I thought my left-rear tire might be too soft, so I tried to really keep it in the brown on the bottom of the corners ... I guess I did a good job of tire management. Zack should've won the race, but I guess Earl was helping us out tonight."
Key notes: Doll, who wiped tears from his eyes climbing from the car, won his fifth Tyler County feature of the season. ... Tyler Carpenter was running fifth when he exited early. ... Sunday’s $7,000-to-win AMRA-sanctioned main event was part of the third annual three-day Mega 100 weekend at Tyler County that showcases each of the speedway’s divisions. ... More than $100,000 was up for grabs over the three-day weekend ... Corey Conley won Saturday's $3,000 Late Model feature. ... Drivers failing to make Sunday's feature lineup: Travis Brown, Steve Weigle, Drake Meeks, Kyle Thomas, Gary Gellner and Ralph Withem.
Winner's sponsors: The Doll Brothers Racing Rocket Chassis is sponsored by BSI Well Service, Mark Richards Racing Enterprises and Payne's Trucking Service.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Freddie Carpenter (988) led the AMRA standings over Tyler Carpenter (881), Ronnie Mayle (823), Jeff Burdette (762) and Colten Burdette (746).
Car count: 25
Editor's note: Corrects Doll's relationship to Earl Hill and car owner.
