Dave Hess Jr. picked up $2,500 for his Freedom victory.
What won the race: Reigning tour champ Dave Hess, from Waterford, Pa., took the lead from polesitter Brent Rhebergen on a lap-four restart and never trailed again, racing to his series-leading third Zimmer's United Late Model Series victory of the season Friday night at Freedom Motorsports Park. Hess earned $2,500 in taking the checkers ahead of fellow second-row starter Greg Oakes and Max Blair, who rallied after a spin while running second.
Quotable: “I couldn’t tell if they were close or not,” said Hess. “I slowed down a little bit in lap traffic, but it worked out for us. Just wanted to keep the thing up front and hope it stayed together sooner or later. We needed one. It’s been tough the last month, so we definitely needed it.”
Key notes: Hess finally broke through at Freedom after contending for victory in his last two starts there. Last year trouble with a lapped car while leading cost him the race, and he finished second in last month's ULMS event. … Oakes stalked Hess through lap traffic until he and Blair made contact racing for the position, resulting in Blair spinning. Oakes retained his spot, while Blair tagged the rear of the field. … Blair became the first driver to break the 14-second mark at Freedom during time trials, turning a lap of 13.924 seconds. He broke his own track record of 14.053 seconds that he set on July 14. … Freedom track owner Bob Reis is considering running at least one make-up event before the end of the season.
On the move: Andy Boozel of Clymer, N.Y., started 15th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Hess’s Suppa Racing Rayburn Race Car is sponsored by Patterson Overhead Door, Auto Value Car-Go Auto Part, Hess Garage and Genesis Racing Shocks.
Points chase: Entering the race, Dave Hess Jr. (188 points) led Greg Oakes (157) and Max Blair (128) in ULMS points.
