Joey Coulter heads toward his first career Super Late Model victory.
What won the race: Earning his first career Super Late Model victory, Joey Coulter of Miami Springs, Fla., won Friday's 40-lap Ultimate Southeast event at Crossville Speedway. The fourth-starting Coulter took command with a bold first-lap slide job and raced to $4,000 triumph over ninth-starting Ross Bailes and polesitter Billy Ogle Jr.
Quotable: "I just can't thank my guys enough ... we have gone through some struggles and I'm surprised we haven't killed each other yet, because we've worked so hard," Coulter said. "We made the call to drop off the (WoO) tour (in July) and switch over to these Longhorn Chassis. I think that's the best decision collectively we've ever made, because my gosh, these cars, they match my style and these guys have done an awesome job adapting to 'em."
Key notes: A former NASCAR Camping World Truck Series winner, the 27-year-old Coulter has spent recent seasons following the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series, including 25 starts in 2017 (with three top-10 finishes). ... Coulter's previous Late Model success came in the Crate Late Model division. ... After Coulter took command in the 40-lapper, Donald McIntosh tangled with fellow front-row starter Billy Ogle Jr. on the second lap and retired after nosing into the inside wall. ... Dennis Franklin ran in the top five the first half of the race but retired after 27 laps.
On the move: Ross Bailes of Clover, S.C., started ninth and finished second in the Barry Wright Race Cars house car, rubbing past Billy Ogle Jr. for the runner-up spot on a restart with four laps remaining.
Winner's sponsors: Coulter's Rum Runner Racing Longhorn Chassis is powered by a Cornett Racing Engine and sponsored by Black Rifle Coffee, Broward Armature & Generator, CIV Driver Optimization, FishWithMe.net, Molecule, Simpson, Race-Fan, Darrell Gwynn Foundation, Burning Bright Band, Dean Guitars, Shell Shock and Tempest Cycles.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Tyler Millwood (369 points) led Jason Welshan (350), Dennis Franklin (311), Jonathan Davenport (233) and Casey Roberts (226).
