Mike Marlar waves to the North Georgia crowd after his victory.
What won the race: Taking advantage of a caution that restored his lead, Mike Marlar of Winfield, Tenn., held off Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., over the remaining circuits to win the Southern Nationals Bonus Series race at North Georgia Speedway. McDowell passed Marlar in traffic, but a caution waved on the same lap, allowing Marlar to go back to the point. He earned $10,000 for the win.
Quotable: “The car was real good out in open traffic but I got some spoiler damage there and that was hurting me pretty bad in that lapped traffic,” Marlar said. “When I catch that traffic I just had to start running a weird line to try to keep my speed up cause I couldn’t really slow down. When they would take what little air I had I was in bad shape. Luckily we got through this deal.”
Key notes: Marlar led every lap after taking pulling past fellow front row starter Donald McIntosh on the opening lap. ... The victory came a day after motor issues prompted Marlar to come home early from the Topless 100 in Batesville, Ark. ... The winner ran much of the feature without the right section of his car's spoiler. ... Marlar won in the series first-ever visit to North Georgia.
