ROSSBURG, Ohio — If Darrell Lanigan needed anything Friday night, perhaps it was a broom. Lanigan of Union, Ky., completed a sweep of Friday’s 47th annual World 100 preliminary action, putting his Clint Bowyer Racing Club 29 Race Cars ride in victory lane, duplicating the feat of teammate Don O’Neal.
“That’s awesome,” Lanigan said. “Both cars winning both features, you can’t get much better than that. I’m sure Clint’s back there in Richmond smiling ear-to-ear.”
While the CBR teammates swept the night’s 25-lap features to earn $10,000 apiece, Lanigan did some housecleaning of a personal note as well, as he completed a sweep of both Thursday and Friday features. Lanigan finished ahead of Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., and Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va. Hudson O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind., finished fourth, while defending World 100 winner Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., completed the top five after improving five spots from 10th.
For the second night in a row, Lanigan patiently watched as another driver darted into the lead and set a blistering pace early. And for the second night in a row, Lanigan methodically gave chase. From the pole, Richards paced the first 17 circuits before Lanigan drove by him on the frontstretch to lead lap 18. After running third early, the sixth-starting Lanigan moved by Hudson O’Neal for second on lap 10 and then chased Richards for seven laps.
“This hot rod’s been awesome this weekend,” Lanigan said. “I just kind of waited, bided my time a little bit, let Josh (Richards) get a little loose there on the long run. Man, this thing was good on the long run. This thing’s been really good right through the middle. The longer you run, the better it gets. I can’t wait ’til tomorrow night to see what we’ve got.”
With his second straight victory, Lanigan became the top point getter through two days of preliminary races, which included 20 heat races and four 25-lap features. As the driver with the highest point total, he’s one of two guaranteed a starting spot in Saturday’s World 100. He also had the privilege of spinning the wheel to determine the inversion for Saturday’s heat races. Lanigan spun a zero, which means there will be no inversion and he’ll start on the pole of one of the six heats.
It was welcome news for both Lanigan and his teammate.
“I think this is the best piece we’ve brought up here so far,” Lanigan said. “I think we’ve got a good chance (Saturday).”
Fourth-starting Owens was able to get by Richards for second on lap 21 and trailed Lanigan at the finish by a scant .659 seconds.
“We had a good car there and I was going to try to make up a lot of ground there in one and two,” Owens said. “But when I did,the car pushed a little bit. I thought, ‘Well, maybe he’ll slip a little bit in three and four.’ But he didn’t. This car has been pretty tough all weekend and tonight we definitely had a really good car.”
Richards, who was fourth in the overall preliminary points entering Friday, put together another solid Eldora finish, even if though wasn’t able to pick up a victory.
“We’ll take it,” Richards said. “We got behind in qualifying a little bit tonight, but I guess it put us on the pole of the heat and got up through there. We made a bunch of changes for the feature, just kind of wanted to see what it felt like. It actually felt really good, we just needed to snug up just a little bit. I kept getting a little free off of four and it was costing me some time. I think we’ll have a pretty good piece for tomorrow."

Jeep Van Wormer wore a big smile after capturing the first heat. He not only praised his brand-new XR1 Rocket by BruceBilt but also the Eldora track crew. “That was great,” he said. “These guys worked so hard to get the track ready for us.” … Bob Gardner brought out a caution in the first heat because his car’s water pump broke and shoved the fan into the radiator. … Scott Bloomquist held on to finish fourth in Heat 1 despite having his belch a large puff of smoke entering turn one on the final lap. He reported that the fan belt came off and knocked the radiator hose loose; his engine builder, Andy Durham, was on the scene after the heat checking for any damage to the powerplant. … Jimmy Owens was another driver who understood that the rain made his pole starting spot in Heat 2 even more important than usual. “This rain’s definitely changed the game,” he said after winning the prelim. “We got a good invert and everything and we were able to capitalize.” … Hudson O’Neal, who turned 17 on Sept. 5, calmly described how he pulled off an opening-lap slider to vault from fourth to first en route to winning the third heat: “I was just lucky enough to get the jump I did and get myself in the position I needed to be on the frontstretch.” … Dustin Nobbe, a UMP DIRTcar Summernationals rookie this season, ran away with the fourth heat, beating Shannon Babb by 2.825 seconds. “The car’s really good right now so hopefully we can keep it up for the feature,” said Nobbe, who will start on the outside pole in 25-lap feature. … Josh Richards said his Best Performance was “wasn’t as balanced as I want it to be,” but it was good enough for him to survive a green-white-checkered restart and lead every lap of Heat 5. “I knew Eddie (Carrier Jr.) was gonna be really good (on the restart) so I knew I had to get a good jump,” commented Richards, who did get away from Carrier when the green flag flew.
Fifth heat
Josh Richards survived a two-lap dash to the finish to win the final heat of the night. Richards had a huge lead disappear when the lone caution appeared on the white flag lap. The caution waved for Doug Hammer, who slapped the turn four wall, just as Richards reached the finish line on the final lap. Richards got the jump on Eddie Carrier Jr. on the restart and held it to the finish. Carrier slid up the hill on the restart and opened the door for Bobby Pierce, who darted through the take second. Carrier held on to third, while Steve Francis took fourth as Curtis Roberts was shuffled back out of the transfer spot.

Fourth heat
Dustin Nobbe of Batesville, Ind., dominated the fourth heat from the pole. Streaking out to a three-second advantage, Nobbe’s only scare came with three laps remaining when he had to dodge the car of Chase Porter, who got out of shape in turn four. Shannon Babb started second and finished second, while Mike Norris used a huge slider to grab third from Jimmy Mars. Mars finished fourth in the caution-free 10-lapper.

Third heat
Diving to the inside of polesitter Tony Jackson Jr. as they entered turn one of the first lap, fourth-starting Hudson O’Neal grabbed the lead and never trailed. O’Neal ran away from runner up Brandon Kinzer, winning buy 3.041 seconds. Behind the top two, Ryan King and Jackson Jr. held on depite a wooly battled for the final two transfer spots. Jackson Jr. was under fire from the opening green, but staved off a charge from Brent Larson to pick up a transfer spot in his first Eldora preliminary feature. Chris Simpson slipped by Larson on the final lap to finish fifth. Chris Barton spun to bring out the first caution on lap four.

Second heat
Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., led all 10 circuits unchallenged to win the second heat. Brian Shirley finished second, 2.05 seconds behind Owens. Fifth-starting Jon Henry improved two spots to claim the third spot, while Jason Feger nipped Zach Dohm at the line to grab the final transfer spot. The race was slowed by one caution for Jeff Alsip who spun in turn two. Riley Hickman ran in the final transfer spot for the first half of the race but lost three positions on the mid-race restart and stumbled back to seventh.

First heat
Taking advantage of a fortuitous caution flag on lap three, polesitter Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich., won the first heat. Van Wormer led Casey Roberts from the start, but gave up the lead briefly. Roberts passed VanWormer in turn one when the leader jumped the cushion, but a caution for a slowing Bob Gardner negated the pass and restored Van Wormer to the front of the field for the restart. VanWormer won ahead of Darrell Lanigan, Roberts and Scott Bloomquist. Bloomquist, who ran fourth throughout, had a huge puff of smoke bellow from his car in turn one on the final lap, but held off Frank Heckenast Jr. for the final transfer spot.

Qualifying
Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., was quickest in the 105-car qualifying session, turning a lap of 15.222 seconds in his G.R. Smith-owned XR1 Rocket.
When Davenport stood on the stage prior to opening ceremonies to accept his fast-time honors, he looked up and mentioned the light rain that had begun moments earlier.
“We’ve got a little ‘traction’ falling from the sky so the first heat might be a slippery one,” said Davenport, who will start fourth in the opening prelim.
Among the drivers who slapped Eldora’s treacherous outside wall during time trials was Thursday-night feature winner Brandon Overton, who limped into the pit area with deck and right-front suspension damage after sliding into the concrete in turn one.
Other wall-bangers included Devin Moran (pancaked the right side), Joey Coulter and Nick Latham, who slammed the turn-one guardrail driving his backup car after his primary machine was sidelined by engine trouble on Thursday.
Five drivers — Josh Richards, Jason Jameson, Michael Page, Casey Roberts and Vic Hill — received penalties for taking an extra circuit during hot laps that required them to use the slower of their two qualifying times. Richards took a big hit as a result, dropping from ninth in the final qualifying order to 40th.

Friday began with overcast skies and some light drizzle in areas around Eldora Speedway, but the conditions have turned partly sunny with the temperature nearing 70 as the day has gone on to usher in a comfortable evening. … Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., had his new Sweet-Bloomquist car — a machine he debuted with a runner-up finish in Sunday night’s ALMS-sanctioned Baltes Classic at Eldora — sidelined by right-side frame damage it sustained when he couldn’t avoid a lapped car that came off the wall in front of him as he led a Thursday-night heat. He is now driving the vehicle he ran to a sixth-place finish in June’s Dream. … Steve Francis of Bowling Green, Ky., is sporting a bandage above his right eye after suffering a cut earlier this afternoon while working on his car’s lower control arm. He had a rod slip and hit him with enough force, he said, “to almost knock me out,” but he was able to stop the bleeding without needing stitches. … Chris Ferguson of Mount Holly, N.C., had to repair the rear deck and some suspension pieces after being involved in a feature accident, but he’s upbeat nonetheless. “I’m not at the stage I was in June (during the Dream) yet — I don’t want to go home,” he said. “We’re light years ahead of where we were here in June.” … Eddie Carrier Jr. of Salt Rock, W.Va., said he fell from a pole position start to a 10th-place finish in Thursday night’s first feature because he car was just “too tight” right from the initial green flag. … Donald McIntosh of Dawsonville, Ga., knocked himself from contention for a transfer spot in a Thursday heat after slapping the outside, damaging the deck and a lower control arm on his Blount Motorsports machine. “The car was awesome,” he said. “But to be fast here you gotta be close to over your head — and unfortunately, I went over my head.” … Jared Miley of Pittsburgh, Pa., ended the first night of action atop the Shane Unger Memorial Rookie of the Race standings with 856 points, leading Brent Larson of Lake Elmo, Minn. (812) and Tony Jackson Jr. of Lebanon, Mo. (808). … During Friday night’s drivers’ meeting Eldora’s Larry Boos reiterated that no wheel covers or mud plugs are allowed on the left side of cars. The rule led to the disqualification from a heat transfer spot of Mosheim, Tenn.’s Vic Hill; officials were informed that Hill had a wheel cover on his machine and checked video of his heat to confirm the fact. … Tanner English of Benton, Ky., had his second career start at Eldora come to an early end due to terminal engine trouble on Thursday.

6 a.m.-6 p.m.: Showers open (front of Lot 2)
7-11 a.m.: Breakfast at turn four concessions
10 a.m. Main gate ticket office opens (tickets, pit passes and will call)
10 a.m.-8 p.m.: Turn-three race registration opens (pit passes and media credential sign-in)
10 a.m.: Turn-four ticket office opens (tickets and pit passes)
10 a.m.: All ADA parking opens (permit required)
11 a.m.: Grandstand cleared and secured for grand opening
Noon: All admission gates/suites/concessions open
Noon: Turn-three pit gate opens
Noon-4:30 p.m.: Technical inspection for Late Models
1 p.m.: Cornhole tournament (in barn)
5 p.m.: Drivers’ meeting
6 p.m.: Hot laps
