PORTSMOUTH, Ohio (Oct. 20) — Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., and former race winner Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., will start on the front row of Saturday’s 37th annual Rhino Ag Dirt Track World Championship at Portsmouth Raceway Park.

Davenport and Owens were the top finishers in combined passing points after two rounds of eight preliminary heat races that set the field for Saturday’s 100-lapper. A total of 16 drivers were locked in to the main event based on their combined heat race finishes.

After rallying from the final starting spot to finish second in his first heat race, Davenport picked up a win in the second round of preliminaries. Owens also finished runner-up in his first heat race, adding his name to the list of Friday’s preliminary winners in the second round of action.

Following Davenport (126.32) and Owens (126.32) were Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla. (120.56), Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill. (120.56) and Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va. (120.56). The fastest lap time was used as a tiebreaker in the passing points standings.

The first eight rows of Saturday's feature will line up straight up by Friday's combined passing points totals. Saturday's three consolation races — transferring two from each — will set the remainder of the field for the 100-lapper. Series and track provisionals will fill out the final rows of the feature lineup.

Pre-race notes

The weather conditions at Portsmouth Raceway Park certainly don’t feel like a typical Dirt Track World Championship. Instead of the usual raw fall air, sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-70s have prevailed all day; temps will cool off into the 50s after sundown, but it’s a far cry from some of the frigid DTWC nights in recent years. … The 72-car field is down eight entries from 2016. … Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., made a show of unloading his throwback No. 18 car during the afternoon. With a healthy crowd of onlookers gathered near his trailer, he used a fog machine to add some drama as his machine was lowered from his rig. … Another extremely popular throwback car is the Flintstone F1yer tribute to the late Mike Duvall driven by Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga. The special-edition t-shirts that Davenport had printed for the event were seen in the hands of many fans walking through the pit area. … Breakout 2017 driver Brandon Overton of Evans, Ga., is making just his third career start at PRP and first with the Dream Racing team. His only DTWC feature appearance came in 2014 when he finished 28th in a Troy Baird-owned mount. … Another rising young driver making a third career visit to PRP is Kyle Hardy of Stephens City, Va., who will hit the track in his Shawn Martin/Pancho Lawler No. 3V. He previously entered the DTWC in 2015 (DNQ) and a regular Lucas Oil Series event last year. … One of the last arrivals to the track was Dennis Erb Jr. of Carpentersville, Ill., who unloaded a throwback car honoring his late father. The vehicle carries the elder Erb’s No. 26. … Jared Hawkins of Fairmont, W.Va., is making his fourth start of 2017 in a Tim Logan-owned Rocket car. He’s racing as a teammate to Logan’s son Lee. … Chassis builder Audie Swartz of Minford, Ohio, is racing with a throwback scheme mirroring the look of the first Charlie Swartz No. 1 race car from 1987. … Tim Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., is racing alongside his son Zack, who is coming off a career-high $15,000 victory last week at Ponderosa Speedway in Junction City, Ky., that made his dad proud. The elder Dohm had an up-close view of his son’s triumph, finishing 11th in the feature. “I didn’t get lapped, so I got to watch him a little bit,” Tim Dohm said with a smile. “I was rooting for him (from inside the car).”

Pre-race setup

For the sixth straight year, the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series will wrap up its season at Portsmouth (Ohio) Raceway Park. The 37th annual Dirt Track World Championship kicked off on Thursday night with modified time trials, heat races and consolations.

The Late Model portion of the event gets under way on Friday night and will once again use a double-heat race format. Passing points will determine the lineups for Saturday’s consolations and 100-lap, $100,000-to-win main event. Heat races will be lined up by random draw and lap counts will vary based on the number of cars plus two laps.

Brandon Sheppard of New Berlin, Ill, enters the weekend as the two-time and defending DTWC winner. The race will determine the 2017 Lucas Oil championship, with only 75 points separating Tim McCreadie of Watertown, N.Y., Josh Richards of Shinnston, W.Va., and Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn.

Late Model consolations will be contested Saturday, setting the remainder of the feature field not locked in through passing points. Saturday’s schedule also includes the Jim Dunn Memorial non-qualifiers’ race and the $4,000-to-win modified feature.
