Michael Chilton celebrates his $4,000 Spring Nationals victory.
What won the race: Using lapped traffic to his advantage, third-starting Michael Chilton of Salvisa, Ky., edged ahead of outside polesitter Eddie Carrier Jr. down the backstretch on lap 29 of 40, pulling away late-race for a $4,000 Schaeffer's Spring Nationals victory at Ponderosa Speedway.
Quotable: "I knew Eric (Wells) was a little softer on tires and I thought that was probably not right but I wasn't sure," Chilton said after the race. "I seen him start fading and then Eddie (Carrier) got out and I thought, 'I just need to pace myself here.' I found me a line down real, real low in three and four that worked ... Lapped cars were in the right place. I kind of had to do a bold move there and (Carrier) kind of got squeezed in the wall. But I appreciate him running me clean."
Key notes: Chilton, a former Ponderosa champion, scored his second career Spring Nationals victory. His first came at the Junction City oval in 2016. … In its first five events, the Spring Nationals tour has had four winners. Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga., the lone repeat winner, didn't compete at Ponderosa. … The race was slowed by two cautions. … The first yellow flag waved on lap 14 when Fred Perry spun in turn two. … Nathan Vawter drew a caution on lap 17 when he spun in turn four. … Mark and Sharon Naylor are in their first year as owners at Ponderosa. ... Connor Meade of Clay City, Ky., was the winner of the Crate Late Model feature.
On the move: Jason Jameson of Lawrenceburg, Ind., advanced from the eighth starting spot to finish fifth.
Winner's sponsors: Chilton drives a Rocket Chassis with a Bullock Race Engine and is sponsored by Parkview Home Center, Caton Industrial Painting, Chilton's Lawn & Maintenance, PPM Racing Products, Brucebuilt Performance and Kamikazi Web Works.
Points chase: After Ponderosa, Eric Wells of Hazard, Ky., tops the standings with 938 points over Casey Roberts (908), Zach Leonhardi (898), Aaron Ridley (892) and Ryan King (844).
