"Little" Robbie Starnes gets rolling before his victory at I-37 Speedway.
What won the race: "Little" Robbie Starnes of Dayton, Texas, son of the long-time Texas standout Robbie Starnes, went from third to first on the final lap Saturday at I-37 Speedway for a Southern Texas Late Model Series victory. After taking second from Cody Leonard in turns one and two, Starnes beat Brandon Brzozowski out of turn four on the final lap for his first Late Model victory.
Quotable: "I was all over the place, almost spun myself out one time. Luckily I had really fast car. My dad, my cousin Keith and my brother have helped me with this and set it up. The car was good, I was messing up," the winner said. "I finally found a groove on the bottom. (The frontrunners) were on the top and I caught them so quick, I thought I might have a shot at this thing. I went into three deeper than I had, it felt good and it stuck. I got a run and passed (Brzozowski) on the straightaway off the last corner. Man, that was crazy.”
Key notes: Driving a car formerly driven by his like-named father, the younger Robbie Starnes has made only a handful of Late Model starts. ... Runner-up Brandon Brzozowski had motor problems in his regular ride and drove the backup car of reigning tour champion G.W. Egbert IV. ... Steven Whiteaker Jr. led the first half of the race before clipping the frontstretch wall, which forced him out of the race. ... Third-finishing Cody Leonard was making his Late Model debut.
Winner's sponsors: Starnes drives a Capital Race Car with a Hendren Crate engine sponsored by Erb Racing, First Class Septic and Seventy Seven Inc.
Car count: 16
Heat race winners: Brandon Brzozowski, Robbie Starnes
