WHEATLAND, Mo. (May 25) — Lucas Oil Speedway tends to bring out something special in Jimmy Owens.

The 46-year-old star from Newport, Tenn., added another victory at the 3/8-mile oval Friday night, capturing the 40-lap Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson to set himself up as the outside polesitter for Saturday evening’s 26th annual Show-Me 100 presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com finale.

Owens earned $6,000 for a triumph that was his first of 2018 on the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and more notably the ninth of his career at Forest Lucas’s spic-and-span facility. He’s won four of the last seven Show-Me 100s at the the track and appeared primed to add one more for the thumb after overtaking Mason Zeigler of Chalk Hill, Pa., for the lead on lap 14 and controlling the remainder of the distance.

“The car’s been great all weekend,” said Owens, who finished sixth in Thursday night’s 45-lap Cowboy Classic after contending for the lead early in the race. “I feel like we need just a little bit, so maybe we can make some changes tomorrow and get it even better to put us in position to get the big one.”

With the race running caution-free from lap 21 to the finish, Owens negotiated lapped traffic with sufficient aplomb in the late stages to prevent Brian Shirley of Chatham, Ill., who grabbed second place from Bobby Pierce of Chatham, Ill., on the final restart, from drawing close enough to mount a serious bid. Owens steered his Ramirez Motorsports XR1 Rocket under the checkered flag 1.093 seconds ahead of Shirley, who advanced from the 10th starting spot to tally a runner-up finish in Bob Cullen’s XR1 Rocket.

Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., who won Thursday night’s 45-lap Cowboy Classic to kick off the Show-Me 100 weekend, finished a charging third after rallying from the 20th starting spot. The 54-year-old Hall of Famer experienced an eventful night, landing a podium finish after officials didn’t allow him to participate in time trials as a penalty for not following “the proper procedure when drawing for a qualifying number” and he won his consolation race despite running the final nine circuits with his Sweet-Bloomquist car’s left-front suspension collapsed from a restart scrape with Jimmy Mars of Menomonie, Wis.

Bloomquist’s third-place run also gave him the most cumulative points from the two preliminary nights, earning him the pole position for Saturday’s $30,000-to-win Show-Me 100.

Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga., settled for a fourth-place finish in his Lance Landers Motorsports Longhorn Race Car after ceding third to Bloomquist on lap 36 and Pierce completed the top five in the Dunn-Benson Racing XR1 Rocket after starting on the outside pole and running second as late as lap 21.

Owens’s victory came after he survived a heat-race incident that saw his night nearly come to an disastrous early end. He slid sideways between turns one and two on the original start of the fourth heat and was hit in the left side of his car by Billy Moyer Jr. of Batesville, Ark., who had to be towed off the track while Owens managed to keep rolling with damage he found to thankfully be only cosmetic.

With Owens allowed to reclaim his outside pole starting spot because no laps were completed, he went on to finish second after his last-lap slider to move ahead of Pierce for the lead off turn four was thwarted by Pierce squeezing between Owens and the outside wall to win a drag race to the finish line by a mere 0.042 of a second.

“Bobby just come down a little bit,” Owens said of his heat-race problem. “He didn’t cut me off or nothing, but he just came down, I went in a little low and it was a lot slicker than I thought … and when I got sideways, they come piling in there and I was like, ‘Holy crap, this ain’t good.’

“I was clocked real good (by Moyer Jr.), but he hit me just right. Man, he got me good there, but it didn’t hurt no suspension or nothing. We had to replace the nose, we bent the quarter-panel, the left door, but the guys worked their tail off and got it back together.”

Then, in the feature, Owens quickly realized that he had a stout race car after he took the green flag from the eighth starting spot.

“As soon as they threw the green I was able to move up, high, low, just wherever,” Owens said. “I was real worried because I was watching the heat races and the consies and everybody was on the bottom, but whenever I made a lap or two around the outside and I was right there and passing cars, I was like, ‘We’ve got a good hot rod because ain’t nobody hardly been able to run up top like that.’

“We were able to maneuver around and get by them guys pretty easy. We just learned from last night. We had a good car until our tires sealed over, and then tonight we just had a good car the whole night.”

Shirley, 37, was able to reduce Owens’s full straightaway edge to about five car lengths at one point with less than 10 laps remaining, but he couldn’t pull any closer.

“I felt like we got close to him there and then he maneuvered through lapped traffic better than me,” said Shirley, who marched from the 18th starting spot to a fifth-place finish in Thursday’s feature. “We were reeling him in, but when we got to lapped traffic he picked the better lines.”

Could Shirley have stuck with and challenged Owens had a caution deposited him on the leader’s rear bumper late in the race?

“I don’t know,”offered Shirley, who starts third in the Show-Me 100. “The way the track was tonight there definitely could be a preferred line. It was gonna be hard, but we did pass guys on the bottom pretty good.

“But Jimmy’s lightning fast here. He’s scary how good he is here. So to be competitive with him and Scott right now feels pretty good.”

Bloomquist, meanwhile, was satisfied with a third-place finish after facing so many obstacles — including a car that wasn’t quite right for the feature.

“We didn’t have time to get it fixed all the way after the incident in the consy,” Bloomquist said. “I’m looking forward to getting it back like it was. I don’t know if we bent a rack-shaft or something, but the steering was catchy. Obviously we had a hard enough lick to tear the left-front suspension off there.”

Bloomquist remained confident of his chances for glory on Saturday.

“The car’s as good as I’ve ever had (at Wheatland),” said Bloomquist, who has five career Show-Me 100 victories but has never won the race since it relocated to Lucas Oil Speedway in 2010. “It’ll be a good race tomorrow.”

Four caution flags slowed the race. The first flew on the original start when polesitter Justin Duty of Molino, Ore., spun between turns one and two, sending the field scattering to avoid him. Subsequent cautions came on lap eight for Joey Moriarty of Phoenix, Ariz., who stopped on the backstretch while running third due to ignition trouble; lap 12 for Scott Crigler of Alton, Mo., who slid to stop between turns one and two; and lap 21 when Mason Oberkramer of Brosley, Mo., stopped in turn two.

Notes: Owens’s 59th career Lucas Oil win came on the 58th birthday of his car owner Leon Ramirez, who attended the evening’s action with his wife Becky. … Zeigler faded to a ninth-place finish after leading the feature’s first 13 laps because his car’s right-front corner was set up too soft, causing him to have problems with the machine bottoming out. … The race paid tribute to race founders Don and Billie Gibson, former owners of the Show-Me 100’s original home, West Plains (Mo.) Motor Speedway.

Preliminary notes and results:

Pre-feature notes

The feature field began rolling onto the racetrack around 11:25 p.m. … The front row for the 40-lap Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson is a study in contrasts between two young drivers: polesitter Justin Duty is a West Coast racer seeking to spring a major upset while outside polesitter Bobby Pierce is the defending Show-Me 100 champion. … The drive of the night was turned in during the second B-main by Scott Bloomquist, who not only came from the seventh starting spot to win the 15-lapper but also ran the last half of the race with his car’s left-front suspension collapsed. A lap-six restart scrape with Jimmy Mars while battling for second left the left-front wheel of Bloomquist’s machine folded up, but he managed to manhandle the vehicle around the 3/8-mile oval for the remaining circuits to emerge victorious. … Tim McCreadie, who won last year’s Friday-night preliminary feature, spent much of the third B-main bidding for second place but Chris Simpson slipped by him coming to the white flag and went on to grab the final transfer spot.

Sixth heat

Hudson O’Neal turned back a furious late-race challenge from Jonathan Davenport to emerge victorious over the former Show-Me 100 champ by 0.340 of a second. Davenport pulled a slider to surge ahead of the 17-year-old in turn two on lap eight, but O’Neal fought back ahead in the third turn and held on to the finish. Logan Martin was a distant third while teammates Jared Landers and B.J. Robinson finished fourth and fifth, respectively.

Finish: Hudson O’Neal, Jonathan Davenport, Logan Martin, Jared Landers, B.J. Robinson, J.C. Wyman, Don O’Neal, Chris Simpson, Al Humphrey, Reid Millard.

Fifth heat

Mike Marlar passed polesitter Jake Davis for the lead on lap two and sailed to victory, beating Brian Shirley by 1.612 seconds. Jesse Stovall finished third while Tim McCreadie, who won last year’s Friday-night preliminary feature, fell one spot short of transferring. Davis brought out a caution on lap two when he wildly slid to a stop at the top of turn two following contact with Brian Shirley during a battle for second.

Finish: Mike Marlar, Brian Shirley, Jesse Stovall, Tim McCreadie, Darrell Lanigan, Chase Junghans, Kolby Vandenbergh, Austin Siebert, Jeff Roth, Blonde Bomber Mitchell, Jake Davis.

Fourth heat

Bobby Pierce led every lap, but he had to survive a furious last-lap bid from Jimmy Owens to edge the four-time Show-Me 100 champion by a mere 0.042 of a second. Owens actually slid in front of Pierce off turn four, but Pierce squeezed between Owens and the wall to win by inches while Austin Rettig finished third. The heat began in rough fashion for the polesitting Owens, who slid sideways between turns one and two on the original start and was hit hard in the left side by Billy Moyer Jr. Owens continued while Moyer’s car was towed off. A caution flag also flew on lap one when Mitch McGrath spun in turn four.

Finish: Bobby Pierce, Jimmy Owens, Austin Rettig, Josh Richards, Shanon Buckingham, Shannon Babb, Payton Looney, Chad Simpson, Mitch McGrath, Billy Moyer Jr.

Third heat

Arizona’s Joey Moriarty grabbed the lead from Scott Crigler on lap two and marched on to a full-straightaway triumph over Billy Moyer, who slipped by Crigler late in the distance for the second spot. Crigler settled for third to move on to the feature. Scott Bloomquist, meanwhile, could only climb up to a seventh-place finish.

Finish: Joey Moriarty, Billy Moyer, Scott Crigler, Jimmy Mars, Brad Looney, Tony Jackson Jr., Scott Bloomquist, Cade Dillard, Jeremy Grady, Cole Wells.

Second heat

Mason Zeigler ran away with the prelim, leading every circuit to defeat Gavin Landers by 0.708 of a second after a lap-eight caution flag flew for Frank Heckenast Jr.’s turn-two spin as he was bidding for the final transfer spot. Zeigler flashed plenty of speed on the fast surface, turning a quick lap of 14.984 seconds en route to the checkered flag. Raymond Merrill finished third, outrunning Mason Oberkramer following the late caution. The race’s original start was called back after front-row mates Landers and Zeigler made contact — damaging the right-rear corner of Landers’s car — and Raymond Merrill hit the rear of Zeigler’s car to bend his machine’s nose. A caution flag, meanwhile, was thrown on lap three when Gregg Satterlee spun between turns one and two while battling Mason Oberkramer for third, and a red flag was put out following the lap-three restart when Joseph Gorby slammed the wall between turns three and four.

Finish: Mason Zeigler, Gavin Landers, Raymond Merrill, Mason Oberkramer, Joe Godsey, Gregg Satterlee, Jack Sullivan, Frank Heckenast Jr., Kaeden Cornell, Joseph Gorby.

First heat

Oregon’s Justin Duty was flawless in rolling to a convincing flag-to-flag victory by a full straightaway over Kyle Bronson. Earl Pearson Jr. finished third with a last-lap, outside pass of Dennis Erb Jr. Caution flags flew on the original start when a multi-car jam-up resulted in Matt Furman sliding to a stop between turns one and two and lap three when Tyler Erb slowed with a flat left-rear tire.

Finish: Justin Duty, Kyle Bronson, Earl Pearson Jr., Dennis Erb Jr., Will Vaught, Matt Furman, Dave Eckrich, Tyler Erb, Brandon Sheppard, Mark Burgtorf (DNS) Shannon Scott.

Qualifying

Lucas Oil Series rookie contender Kyle Bronson of Brandon, Fla., was the overall fastest qualifier, turning a lap of 15.188 seconds in the first group. The performance on the second day of his first-ever visit to the 3/8-mile oval gave him the pole position for the first of the evening’s six heat races.

Four-time Show-Me 100 champion Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn., was quickest in the second group with a lap of 15.269 seconds, giving him the pole for the evening’s fourth heat.

Other heat polesitters are Gavin Landers of Batesville, Ark., Joey Moriarty of Phoenix, Ariz., Jake Davis of Hackett, Ark., and Jonathan Davenport of Blairsville, Ga.

Thursday-night feature winner Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., meanwhile, was not allowed to participate in time trials by officials because it was determined that the 54-year-old driver and his team “did not follow the proper procedure when drawing for a qualifying number.” As a result, he will start last in the third heat.

Pre-race notes

Some thunderstorms dotted the area early Friday morning, but skies over Lucas Oil Speedway have been partly sunny throughout the day and temperatures have climbed into the upper 80s. … The field is at 64 cars — down one from Thursday’s opener — after the departure of Terry Phillips (left to run USTMS-sanctioned modified events in the upper Midwest) and Aaron Poe and the addition of Cliff Morrow, who didn’t race last night because he forgot to bring along his helmet. … Coming off a miserable opening night performance in which he qualified next-to-last in his group and didn’t threaten to make the feature, Darrell Lanigan of Union, Ky., has switched Clint Bowyer Racing cars. “This car can’t be as bad as the other one,” the frustrated Lanigan said. … Payton Looney of Republic, Mo., is ready for Friday’s action after his car was knocked out of Thursday’s feature due to a broken rearend. A Tony Jackson Jr. crewman drove back to Jackson’s shop in Lebanon, Mo., to retrieve a replacement rearend for Looney, who installed the rear in his machine earlier this afternoon. … Thursday-night feature winner Scott Bloomquist’s crewman, Jordan Bland, is working with a brace and wrap on his right wrist after injuring it in the pit area while getting Bloomquist’s car ready for hot laps last night. Bland said he’s “toughing it out for the weekend” but will likely seek further evaluation of his arm following the weekend; he said a race fan who is a nurse wrapped his injury and provided him a brace. … Lucas Oil founder Forest Lucas was in the pit area Friday afternoon visiting with officials and competitors, including the Lucas Oil-sponsored combo of team owner Ronnie Stuckey and driver Earl Pearson Jr.

Pre-race setup

The 26th annual Show-Me 100 presented by ProtectTheHarvest.com at Lucas Oil Speedway continues Friday night with the Tribute to Don and Billie Gibson (founders of the Show-Me 100 in 1993 at West Plains Motor Speedway), a full racing program co-sanctioned by the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series and Lucas Oil Midwest LateModel Racing Association. It marks the third consecutive year that a second complete preliminary show will be run during the Show-Me 100 weekend, which traditionally had seen a qualifying night of time trials and heat races contested on Friday.

A 40-lap feature paying $6,000 to win will top Friday’s action. The normal Lucas Oil Series format will be used with drivers split into two groups for time trials and the results from the first lining up Heats 1-3 and those from the second aligning Heats 4-6. The top three finishers from each heat will transfer to the feature and two racers from each of three B-mains will complete the feature field, which will not include any provisional starters nor offer Lucas Oil or MLRA points.

Drivers earn points for A-main and B-main finishes (and qualifying group fast-timers will earn 10 bonus points) in the two preliminary shows. The top 18 in the combined points after the two prelim programs will lock into Saturday night’s $30,000-to-win Show-Me 100 headliner while the remainder will move to three B-Mains on Saturday.

Thursday-night feature winner Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., heads into Friday night’s competition leading the Show-Me 100 weekend points standings.

Tonight’s drivers’ meeting is set for 6 p.m. CT. Hot laps are scheduled for 6:30 p.m. with time trials kicking off the competitive portion of the show immediately after.
