Ricky Weiss earned $10,000 for his Challenge Cup victory.
What won the race: Completing a perfect night at Dakota State Fair Speedway, Ricky Weiss of Headingly, Manitoba, drove to victory in Saturday's Challenge Cup XVIII. After winning a pair of heats, Weiss started from the pole and went on to earn a $10,000 payday while outrunning fellow front-row starter Don Shaw in the Wollak Construction WISSOTA Challenge Series event.
Key notes: Weiss won his fifth career WSC race while snapping Shaw’s three-race win streak at Dakota State Fair Speedway. Shaw, of Ham Lake, Minn., swept both series races there in 2017 and won Thursday’s $5,000-to-win opener. … The victory was Weiss's seventh overall of 2018 — including three early-season Super Late Model triumphs — and marked the first win worth $10,000 of his burgeoning career. ... Drivers competed in two heat races apiece with points determining the feature lineup. Weiss won both the first and eighth heat. ... Finishing third, Pat Doar of New Richmond, Wis., was back in the podium following Thursday’s 25th-place finish. Doar has five top-five finishes in six races this season. … Nineteen of 25 starters finished the race. … The first four finishers placed where they started. … The race was the second for the series at Dakota State Fair Speedway in a three-day stretch during its annual Wheel Jam. The track is not racing weekly this season with the retirement of longtime promoter Orville Chenoweth, but he agreed to host two WISSOTA Challenge events.
On the move: Kent Arment of Aberdeen, S.D., finished fifth after starting 10th.
Winner's sponsors: Weiss drives a Sweet-Bloomquist car powered by a Vic Hill Racing Engine and sponsored by Derrick's Sandblasting, AIE Communications, Hawkeye Construction, Penske Racing Shocks, Allied Roofing, Orthopaedic Institute of Western Kentucky, Keewatin Truck Service, Turk Enterprises, Forest Flying Service and Straight Ahead Ventures.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Ricky Weiss (322) led John Kaanta (308), Don Shaw (301), Pat Doar (297) and Jeff Wildung (275).
