Jake Knowles celebrates his last-lap victory in his Greenville debut.
What won the race: Overtaking polesitter race-long leader Ashton Winger on the last lap, fourth-starting Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga., captured the Durrence Layne Late Model Series Rumble on the Gumbo weekend opener for a $2,000 payday on the Crate Late Model tour.
Quotable: "He's a good buddy of mine. I hate to take it away from him like that, but I was eager for a win, too," winner Jake Knowles said of his victory over Ashton Winger. "This is my first time here. It's awesome. They need to put it a little closer to Georgia and it'd be perfect."
Key notes: Knowles is unbeaten in three starts in his new Longhorn Chassis. .... He won on the Crate Late Model series (formerly NeSmith) for the first time. ... Runner-up Ashton Winger, racing for the first time without his father, shock specialist Gary Winger of GW Performance, struggled with right-front damage and said he felt like he gave the race away. ... Series points leader Cory Hedgecock finished third. ... Eleven of 24 starters completed 40 laps. ... Saturday's tour event at Greenville pays $2,500-to-win
On the move: Spencer Hughes of Meridian, Miss., started 10th and finished seventh.
Winner's sponsors: Jake Knowles drives a Longhorn Chassis sponsored by Buster Goss Body Shop, Knowles Race Parts & Bodies, Josh Roberts Trucking, Curbow Logging, Shorty's Motorsports, Martins Wrecker Service, AG Calf Ranch and JW Motorsports.
