Amanda Whaley picked up a $3,000 paycheck for Tuesday's victory.
What won the race: Polesitter Amanda Whaley of Millsboro, Del., survived a mid-race challenge from Dale Hollidge and Austin Hubbard and a close call with a lapped car in the final circuits to capture Tuesday's 46th annual Camp Barnes Benefit Race for Super Late Models at Delaware International Speedway. She beat her boyfriend, Ross Robinson, to the finish line after leading the 25-lap special event from flag-to-flag, pushing her total winner's take to $3,625 with lap money.
Quotable: “When that one caution came out and they said the 11 (Hubbard) was second I thought, Oh here we go. I mean, Austin could take Charlie’s water truck out there and win with it,” said Whaley. “I started over-driving a little bit and (the car was) getting a little bit tight and I jumped that cushion that time. When I turned it just shot me right off of it right straight and I collected Austin and Dale and I definitely don’t like to win that way, but ... here we are. I want to be upset, but my gosh, we’ve done won two (races) tonight. I’m tickled.”
Key notes: While Whaley raced off the pole to control the race's first 14 laps, after a caution flag she was challenged by Hubbard, whose bid for the lead was snuffed out by another caution on lap 15. ... On lap 16 the top-running Whaley had Hollidge and Hubbard underneath her, but, when Hollidge checked up to avoid hitting Whaley exiting turn two, he slid sideways and heavy contact between him and Hubbard ensued, ending both drivers' hopes. ... Whaley tangled with a lapped car on lap 23, but she maintained control as the slower machine spun and then outran Robinson on the green-white-checkered restart. ... Robinson held off two-time '18 DIS winner Ricky Elliott for the runner-up spot. ... Whaley also won the evening's 15-lap RUSH Crate Late Model feature for an extra $750 check. ... Proceeds from the event benefit the Delaware State Police-owned Camp Barnes, which kids 10-13 can attend free of charge from June through August. The camp opened in 1947. … Hal Browning was honored at intermission for his years of dedication to Delaware racing.
Winner's sponsors: Whaley’s family-owned Rocket is powered by a Clements engine and carries sponsorship from Richard D. Whaley Concrete, Daugherty Motorsports and Lasher BBQ.
