Jake Knowles (66) takes the checkers ahead of Cory Hedgecock (23).
What won the race: Slipping by race-long leader Cory Hedgecock following a restart on lap 42, third-starting Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga., led the rest of the way to win Sunday’s Durrence Layne Chevrolet Series King of the Crate 60 at North Alabama Speedway. Hedgecock, who started second, settled for a runner-up finish, while eighth-starting Eric Hickerson finished third. Knowles earned $5,000.
Quotable: “Ever since Cory and I ran first and second the last time we raced, I’ve been thinking about this race, and it seemed like we raced all over the place the first part of the race,” Knowles said. “I want to thank Cory for racing me clean, and I also want to thank all of these fans for coming out to watch us on a hot day. It was slick coming off turn two and we both ended up going off there, and the last time he did it, I was able to sneak by and hold on for the win.”
Key notes: Knowles finished 0.226 seconds ahead of Hedgecock to claim his third series win of the season. … Hedgecock had a 0.675-second advantage when the caution appeared on lap 41 for sixth-running Shannon Davis. … Nineteen of 24 starters finished with 15 completing all 60 laps. … Provisional starter T.J. Brittain improved 11 positions after starting 24th. … Consolation winner Ben Brocato competed only 19 laps and was the first to exit. ... The event's heat races were held Saturday after rain pushed back the two-day program 24 hours.
On the move: Eric Cooley of Fulton, Miss., started 15th and finished sixth.
Winner's sponsors: Knowles drives a Longhorn Chassis sponsored by Buster Goss Body Shop, Knowles Race Parts & Bodies, Josh Roberts Trucking, Curbow Logging, Shorty's Motorsports, Martins Wrecker Service, AG Calf Ranch and JW Motorsports.
Points chase: Before North Alabama, Cory Hedgecock (846) of Loudon, Tenn., led Ashton Winger (798), Jake Knowles (752), Andy Picklesimer (694) and Jamey Boland (666).
