Steve Mathis Jr. celebrates atop his car at East Bay.
What won the race: Steve Mathis Jr. of Plant City, Fla., overtook Kyle Bronson with two laps remaining Saturday at East Bay Raceway Park for a $5,400 Crate Late Model victory in the Dalton Myers 54.
Key notes: Mathis also crossed the finish line first in last year's event, but the victory was stripped because his tires were found to be illegal. … Polesitter Josh Peacock led the first 45 laps but spun after losing the lead by Kyle Bronson on lap 46. ... Mathis overtook Bronson on the second-to-last lap. ... Travis Varnadore was running a solid second before mechanical woes forced him out past halfway. ... Georgia youngster Ashton Winger, the Scott Thompson Memorial winner, finished third. ... The race was originally set for Dec. 15, but rained out. ... East Bay’s annual Winternationals kick off Jan. 22 and runs through Feb. 16, with the Lucas Oil Dirt Late Model Series scheduled Feb. 3-9.
