Donald McIntosh picked up Saturday's $5,000 Southeastern Classic at Dixie.
What won the race: Donald McIntosh of Dawsonville, Ga., slipped under Shane Clanton on lap 21 and led the rest of the way for his first win of the season in Saturday's 50-lap Southeastern Classic at Dixie Speedway. McIntosh, who overtook Clanton just as Clanton grabbed the lead from Tyler Millwood, went on to a $5,000 triumph, while the fourth-starting Clanton settled for second. Austin Horton finished third.
Quotable: “We kinda gambled on our right front tire,” said winner Donald McIntosh, who won on his 26th birthday. “We went probably a little harder than what they went. I knew if we could get a long green flag we’d be pretty good and I saw the lapped cars holding them up and I was like, ’this is gonna be a good opportunity here.’ When we got to them, my car was just really good. They said I was pulling away from them, so I kinda backed off there at the end just to make sure I stayed out of trouble.”
Key notes: McIntosh, who has rejoined Blount Motorsports this season, made a rare appearance in his family-owned 007 Race Car, which got it’s power from a Buick engine developed in-house. “It’s been a long road,” McIntosh said. “We’ve been working on a Buick (engine) for a couple years and it’s just turned out so good. This is the first race we’ve had it out since it broke about a year ago.” … It was McIntosh’s first victory in the car since winning the Hangover 40 at 411 Motor Speedway on Dec. 30, 2017. … Polesitter Tyler Millwood led the first 19 laps before getting caught behind a lapped car, allowing Clanton to lead lap 20 after the two made contact exiting turn four. Clanton led less than a quarter of a lap, however, as McIntosh made the winning pass in turns one and two and pulled away to win by 4.438 seconds. … Millwood slipped to third on lap 20 and lost one more spot to eventual third-place finisher Austin Horton on lap 22. ... Ten drivers completed all 50 circuits. ... Dixie Speedway kicked off its 50th anniversary season. … Jason Hiett was running second when he car began trailing smoke on lap four; he stopped two laps later.
Winner's sponsors: McIntosh’s 007 Race Car has a Buick powerplant prepared by his father David McIntosh and carries sponsorship from Motion Control Suspension, NCS and Collins Signs.
Points chase: Justin Shipley of Douglasville, Ga., won the 2018 track championship.
