Eventual Spring 50 winner Bobby Pierce (32) battles with Jason Jameson (12).
What won the race: Bobby Pierce of Oakwood, Ill., survived a lap-20 brush with Jason Jameson to grab the lead, then dominated en route to a $5,000 victory in Saturday's 43rd annual Spring 50 at Florence Speedway. The 22-year-old Pierce easily outdistanced Kent Robinson at the checkered flag.
Quotable: "Sorry about Jason there," Pierce said of his scrape with Jameson. "He messed up twice in one and two so I thought I’d try to capitalize. I was waiting for him to cross me over, and then I felt him hit me in the butt and I was like, 'Well, maybe I wasn’t clear.' I thought I gave him time to turn under ... but it was so much fun racing him. He drives a race car really fast, and when you drive a race car that fast on the cushion, trying to catch him, that’s really hard."
Key notes: Pierce won his fourth 2019 race; his previous victories came during January's Wild West Shootout in Arizona. ... Jameson, who inherited the lead when Kyle Bronson slowed with rear-end trouble on lap 11, saw his hopes end on the 20th circuit when Pierce pulled a slider on him rounding turns three and four. As Pierce slid up the track in turn four, Jameson hit the rear of Pierce's car and bounced into the outside wall. ... On lap four, Jameson tangled with Steve Casebolt, who ricocheted into the turn-one wall. ... Robinson, who led the first lap before being overtaken by Bronson, settled into second late on a rough-and-tumble surface that contributed to numerous caution flags. ... Robby Hensley jumped the cushion in turns one and two, resulting in another contending car going to the pits.
On the move: Justin Rattliff of Campbellsville, Ky., started 11th and finished third in his first Florence start in two years.
Winner's sponsors: Pierce's Rocket Chassis has a Pro Power Racing Engine with sponsorship from Hoker Trucking, Allgayer Inc., Premier Waste Services, Mesilla Valley Transportation, Carnaghi Towing & Repair, Berger's Marina, Digital Copy Systems, First Spear and Quality Paint & Body.
