Wil Herrington picked up the checkers at Magnolia Motor Speedway.
What won the race: From his outside front row starting position, Wil Herrington of Hawkinsville, Ga., led flag-to-flag for a 40-lap Durrence Layne Chevrolet Series victory Sunday at Magnolia Motor Speedway. Pulling away from Jake Knowles on a restart with two laps remaining, Herrington won by 1.079 seconds, while the third-starting Knowles settles for a runner-up finish. Oakley Johns rallied from 11th to finish third.
Quotable: “My dad brought me here to watch a race when I was about 10 years old, and when I started racing, I always wanted to race here,” Herrington said. “This was the first time I’ve raced here, and I like it as much as a driver, as I did as a 10-year-old. This black ice is slick — very slick — but I like it. Ashton (Winger) and I had a good race going and I hated that it ended the way it did for him.”
Key notes: Herrington earned $2,000. ... Seventeen of 24 starters finished; 13 completed 40 laps. … Ashton Winger of Hampton, Ga., who won Saturday at Whynot Motorsports Park in Meridian, Miss., ran in the top three for most of the race and was second when he pitted on lap 38, dropping him to 18th. … Winger and Jack Knowles swapped the runner-up spot three times, with Winger grabbing the position on lap 31 and holding it until forced to pit. … Oakley Johns of Summertown, Tenn., was up to fifth in lap and grabbed two more positions in the final two laps. … The race was slowed by three cautions. … Polesitter Austin Franklin finished 16th, one lap down. … Magnolia’s Memorial Day weekend special was presented by the Army National Guard. … The series returns to Magnolia Nov. 29-30.
On the move: Oakley Johns of Summertown, Tenn., started 11th and finished third.
Winner's sponsors: Herrington drives a CVR Race Car with sponsorship from Middle Georgia Roofing and Last Air and Electrical.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Jake Knowles (196 points) of Rome, Ga., led John Ownbey (194), David Kay (180), Jadon Frame (178) and T.J. Britain (176).
