Cruz Skinner and his father Greg enjoy victory lane at Cochran.
What won the race: Polesitter Cruz Skinner of Oxford, Ala., picked up his first Durrence Layne Chevrolet Series victory of the season, winning Saturday’s weekend finale for the Crate Late Model tour at Cochran Motor Speedway. Skinner finished 0.511 seconds ahead of runner-up Joseph Brown in winning the tour’s Red, White and Blue Salute to America. He earned $2,500.
Quotable: “To be successful in this series, you have to be good in qualifying and you especially have to be good in lapped traffic," Skinner said. "When I got in heavy lapped traffic, it kind of scared me because I knew several cars were all around me trying to get the lead.”
Key notes: Skinner is the tour’s sixth winner in eight races. … Cochran hosted back-to-back nights of Durrence Layne Chevrolet Series action. … Friday’s winner Jake Knowles of Rome, Ga., finished eighth. … Third-starting Mark Whitener of Middleburg, Fla., completed only seven laps and finished 22nd. … Seventeen of the 24 starters were running at the finish, with 16 completing 50 laps. … Caleb Gay won the $2,500-to-win Limited Late Model feature.
On the move: Runner-up Joseph Brown of Columbus, Ga., started 12th.
Winner's sponsors: Skinner’s Capital Race Car is sponsored by Skinner Body Shop, A&W Outdoor Services, NAPA Auto Parts and Austin Hinds Motors.
Points chase: Entering the weekend, Jake Knowles (470 points) of Rome, Ga., led Cruz Skinner (422), Wil Herrington (394), Tyler Wood (392) and Oakley Johns (390).
