Dane Dacus talks about his Southern All Stars win at Thunderhill.
What won the race: Dane Dacus of Lakeland, Tenn., turned back an early charge from Josh Putnam and then a late rally from Ashton Winger before finally beating Mother Nature. From his outside front row starting spot, Dacus led flag-to-flag in Saturday’s rain-shortened Southern All Stars race at Thunderhill Speedway for a $4,000 victory. He was two laps shy of the scheduled 40 when rain picked up and series officials called the race complete.Dane Dacus led flag-to-flag to win Saturday's Southern All Star race at Thunderhill. Quotable: “The car was flawless all night. It hot lapped good, qualified good (and was) good in the feature,” said Dacus. “The only thing that was really holding us up was the rain there. The car was good all night. … We were just trying to get to (the lapped cars) and pass ‘em. Everybody did a good job. Everybody held there line, so it was a good race.”
Key notes: Dacus recorded his third career Southern All Star triumph. … His last series victory was July 8, 2017 at Thunderhill. … With rain falling around the high-banked, quarter-mile oval, Winger, who started fifth, made a handful of attempts to pass Dacus in the waning laps before settling for second. … Winger of Hampton, Ga., piloted the No. 17 of Calera, Ala.’s Billy Franklin, who was out of town on a business trip. … Rain began falling on lap 12 and the race was slowed on lap 24 when picked up noticeably. But after letting up slightly the race went green again for the final 14 lap rush to lap 38. … Nine of the 16 starters completed 38 laps. … Greg Love scratched after hot laps.
On the move: Georgian Zach Leonhardi started 11th and finished sixth.
